FishPal River Don Update 20/08/24
River levels are now creeping towards summer lows and as a result salmon catches have slightly tailed off, a small lift in water levels last week helped for a day or two, a few fish were stirred up again which brought about some success for anglers across several beats. The heaviest landed was a thumping 25lbs, from Kintore AC beat.
We can’t really complain about water heights having had a series of rises over the past couple of months which has kept the grilse coming in and moving up through the beats. Good sport was reported on several beats throughout July and into August with fresh grilse from 3-7lbs making up the bulk of landings. A few bigger summer fish up to 15lbs were also to be had along with several sea trout to 6lbs. Runs of fresh fish entering the system have slowed over the past week but there are plenty of fish of all colorations scattered throughout the system to entice anglers out for a cast.
Brown trout angling has been patchy depending on the weather, a few warmer and less windy days produced steady hatches of BWO’s which brought the fish on for a good hour or so. Sedges and a decent spinner fall in the evenings have encouraged the bigger fish up to the surface as darkness appears. Theres certainly a cooler feel to the evenings already appearing and dare I say it we might have seen the summer, if at all it ever arrived!
Weather forecast, looks like a wetter week ahead across Donside with several showers appearing, duller overcast conditions should also suit those out salmon fishing.
