Tyne Update August 2nd

The Tyne has enjoyed runs of Summer Salmon, Grilse and Sea Trout in recent weeks. Regular lifts in water has meant that fish are very well spread with catches reported throughout the whole system when given favourable water conditions. Catches have reassuringly included some lovely fish with numbers of mid teens Summer salmon in excellent condition.

A small flavour of recent successes in no particular order include a 5 1/4lb sea trout caught by Monya Maxwell Scott at Chipchase lower castle beat and Michael Holt in the same party at Chipchase caught a 7lb salmon in the upper castle beat. Fishing with me Howard McCain had a 4lb sea trout from Dilston whilst on the same day John Sadler landed a stunning 16lb salmon from the same beat. Plenty of fish were hooked and lost around this time, many of them sea trout. Neil Lobban and Stuart Ray managed to land 4 mid teens salmon between them too when a good run of fish responded to a lift of fresh water on the main river. After a frustrating day losing 4 fish on the same Saturday, 12yr old Ollie Whetherall-Morris made no mistake the following day landing a  4lb sea trout from the North Tyne with his Uncle Adam. Also landing a nice sea trout and losing 2 good salmon was James Cutting fishing at Warden and then Dilston.

July at Warden Fishing saw some very fresh fish landed and sea trout , salmon and grilse all featured in the catches that graced anglers nets. Good river levels and water conditions prevailed for most of the month.  Included in catches was Andrew Jackson with two salmon, the best at 16lb and a 5lb sea trout.  Andrew was then guiding Chris Atkinson and Dan Winstanley and on the 15th Dan accounted for Warden’s fish of the month - a fine salmon conservatively estimated at 19lb from the race on the Baddox beat. Later that day Dan also enjoyed further success - another fresh salmon of 12.5lb for him that was caught on the Watersmeet beat.

Andrew writes “The next day Chris got in on the action and I was delighted to have been able to net a sea trout of 4lb and a salmon of 9.5lb both very fresh from the Fourstones and Baddox beats. On the 22nd Dick Telford caught a 3.5lb sea trout and Dan Heathcote caught a 12lb salmon both on size 12 flies at Thistlerigg. Paul Offley enjoyed his day on the 23rd when he had two sea trout, best 4.5lb from the long stream at Fourstones. James Stokoe had a great day on the 25th when after hooking and losing several sea trout a pod of grilse arrived too at Thistlerigg and he netted three fish, two at 6lb and one at 3.5lb. The next day also at Thistlerigg Jim Hunter caught a brand new 11lb salmon. Congratulations to everyone who enjoyed sport this July.”

At Bywell rods have also enjoyed sport -  and also frustratingly lost a number of fish too! Anglers bringing fish to the net there have included Tony Richardson, Mr A. Percy, Bruno Porter and Steven Keeney who landed sea trout of 2lbs, 6lbs ,4lbs and 4 lbs respectively whilst landing a mixture of grilse and salmon up 16 lbs were Graham Phillips, Mike Asherton, George Farnsworth, Jago Porter, Glenn Hood and Steven Keeney.

Riverdale Hall have also recorded fish including a nice salmon of 12lbs for Dave Hogg of Rod and Tackle shop in Cramlington.

Given good water and lower temperatures the Tyne should continue to fish well as we move into August. If low water and higher temperatures persist then fishing early and late or on the back of kielder releases can be more productive.

Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST)

All fish landed should be kept in water in a net and handled as little as possible before careful release. Spring fish particularly are very precious and each one is a special catch to be well looked after. Please remember they will be in the river a very long time before spawning and deserve your respect. The latest guidance on Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST)  has been adopted by many Tyne beats and syndicates and can be found at Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST) | Tyne Rivers Trust
