Tyne Update July 7th
After the driest Spring on record the Tyne has enjoyed a few lifts of water since the second week of June and runs of sea trout and salmon have begun to build. Fish seem to have run hard whenever there has been water with both salmon and sea trout appearing in catches well up both the North and South Tynes. The levels in Kielder reservoir, which was very low earlier in the year, have also been raised a bit which is also good news for the weeks ahead.
Recent catches include Joseph Thompson who has christened his new rod with 3 salmon of 8, 10 and 14 lbs all taken in the Bardon Mill area of the South Tyne and all on fly - a Scandi style Willie Gunn cone head tube and then a size 12 cascade. All fish were pretty fresh and returned carefully.
Also successful on the South Tyne was youngster Reuben Williams with a 10 lb salmon on a single handed fly rod and Flamethrower tube fly.
Fishing the North Tyne on Riverdale Hall beats above the Rede on a lift of water as part of a ladies weekend hosted by Lucinda Ewin and Lucy Bowden, Irish visitor Dee Delan landed 2 fresh sea trout and lost another on an Irish shrimp pattern.
Also recently on the same beats ghillie Adam Turner landed 2 sea trout, and his guest, also called Adam, also landed a sea trout on fly.
Local rod Patrick Gray reaped the rewards of an early morning start yesterday with a nice fresh salmon landed on fly and fishing with me at Dilston over the weekend Phil Jones landed his first ever migratory fish - a sea trout taken on a large Cascade fly in high water.
Earlier in June Lucinda Ewin hit the water right a Dilston and landed a lovely sea trout of about 7lbs on fly and James Stokoe's guests have landed sea trout at Warden.
Frustratingly several fish have been hooked and lost by guests at Bywell with only several sea trout making it to the net so far this month.
Prospects seem much brighter for anglers on the Tyne than just a fortnight ago - fingers crossed for some good fishing ahead!
Please remember that Spring fish will be longest in the river before spawning and treat them with the utmost care when returning any captures (see CAST advice below).

Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST)
All fish landed should be kept in water in a net and handled as little as possible before careful release. Spring fish particularly are very precious and each one is a special catch to be well looked after. Please remember they will be in the river a very long time before spawning and deserve your respect. The latest guidance on Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST) has been adopted by many Tyne beats and syndicates and can be found at Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST) | Tyne Rivers Trust
