Why fish in Kenya

Scattered with idyllic beaches, the 540 km Kenyan coastline boasts an abundance of ocean mountains, banks and reefs – and is world-renowned for hosting some of the best deep-sea game fishing!

Generally offshore big game fishing along the Kenya coastline is possible throughout the year, with a short off season in May/June - however, there are generally three parts to the season for sport fishing.

  • The Yellowfin Tuna season commences from July through to the end of October, here you can expect to catch plenty of Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish, Giant Trevally….and the Sailfish and Black Marlin should be starting to run closer to shore…
  • The Billfish season, October to late March, starts when the northeast monsoon blows; October, November and December is the main Sailfish season, especially off Malindi together with other pelagic fish.
  • The main Marlin Season generally runs from between January and late-March, and is a great time to catch both Sailfish, and Black, Blue and Striped Marlin - it is also a good time of year for Broadbill Swordfish.
