Tyne Update April 28th
Like many other rivers this Spring, the Tyne has hardly seen a drop of rain for weeks. As I write levels are very low throughout the system and in Kielder reservoir, particularly for this time of year. These unfavourable conditions have reduced fishing pressure and catches have been sparse to say the least.
There have been some successes to report however beginning with Andrew Sowerby who landed the first fish at Bywell on March 1st on a fly tied by his own hand from Lower Church. The fish was a lovely sea-liced 10lber and was carefully netted and returned. That was followed at Bywell by a sea-liced 8lber landed by Ian Scruton form the castle Stream on a size 16 Aurora Cascade in very low water. Several other fish have been lost from the same beat including a lovely estimated 10lber lost after a good fight in the same Castle Stream at the net by Gary Hutcheson - next time Gary!
Further upstream in the Corbridge and Hexham area fish have been seen periodically and Stuart Maughan, Neil Lobban and more recently youngster Tom McIntyre have all landed Spring fish on fly from the main river. I have heard too of occasional fish being landed in the lower main river but have no details.
We are all praying for rain to liven things up a bit and get fish moving into the system - get out and wash your car please Andrew!
Please remember that Spring fish will be longest in the river before spawning and treat them with the utmost care when returning any captures (see CAST advice below).
Speycasting tuition and guided fishing with an AAPGAI Master instructor can also be booked through me at www.tyneflyfishing.co.uk.

Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST)
All fish landed should be kept in water in a net and handled as little as possible before careful release. Spring fish particularly are very precious and each one is a special catch to be well looked after. Please remember they will be in the river a very long time before spawning and deserve your respect. The latest guidance on Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST) has been adopted by many Tyne beats and syndicates and can be found at Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST) | Tyne Rivers Trust
