Überblick

Entrance to the beat is four miles west from Aberfeldy to Kenmore road, the A827, just past Crotmoraig farm, turn to the right at the Newhall sign.

Access is through a large steel gate (which must be kept locked to ensure privacy). A track extends the length of the beat and there are paths alongside much of the river.

Four wheel drive is recommended in winter and bad conditions. Fishing is from the right (south) bank. There is ample off road parking at the Point, Millers and Shepherds pools. A track suitable only for four wheel drive vehicles connects the Point and Millers. Access to Pipers is best from Sheperds parking place.

Pools on Upper Bolfracks

Point

The ultimate pool for fishing the fly! The pool is about 35 yards across making it the perfect distance. The opposite bank (which is rarely fished) is steep and rocky, offering good shade and the water is always clear as it is fed by Loch Tay. The current comes round a bend and almost works the fly automatically hanging it nicely. The pool is easy to wade gently shelving to the deeper North bank. A fantastic stretch with easy access and a fishing hut.

The Junction

Best fished in low to medium waters, this is the confluence of the rivers Lyon and Tay. It is very wide and you need to wade out to the centre. The water is approximately knee deep but fast flowing, so care and a good stick are essential. It is known to hold good fish and quite a few have been lost at the tail so strong tackle to turn them is advised. In recent years a small pool has developed at the tail known as the Pot.

Millers Bed

Fast streamy water at the top, slowing down from the middle to the tail. Wading is easy in the slack water on our bank. In high conditions there is always slower stretch on the right bank offering shelter to running fish.

Pipers

Pipers is a fast running rocky pool. It is approached from the pool below (Shepherds) by following a rugged path. It is a bit of a clamber, but often well worth the effort. Great care must be taken when wading. There are a couple of great holding spots in the belly and tail of the pool. There is also a very interesting hole tight to the right bank, between Pipers and Shepherds.

Shepherds

Shepherds offers perhaps the nicest wading in low to medium water. The bed is made of smallish gravel. The deeper water lies towards the centre, a long pool worth fishing all the way to the trees.
