Überblick

Cottown beat runs through pasture and woodland, making a varied and in places challenging yet rewarding stretch of water.

The beat includes both banks to the concrete wall supporting the road, and then proceeds only on the south bank of the river. The fishing extends for over three quarters of a mile from the island below the Manse by Bellabeg Church, (starting at the eastern tip of the island there) down to opposite Cottown Farm (AB36 8XA).

This part of the river is surrounded by conservation areas with a Special Protection Area west of it, so the potential for seeing abundant and rare wildlife adds to the appeal of fishing the water.

The river is known for its wild brown trout fishing, and salmon come up in midseason runs when the water rises, and to spawn towards the end of the year.

Fishing is most likely to be fruitful in poor light, whether for trout or salmon.

This part of the river has not been well fished for the last 20 years, so there is a dearth of catch record.

Whilst there is no ghillie on the beat, the owners or their representative will try and visit anglers during their visit to check permits and offer advice.
