Überblick

The Stora-Laxa in Hreppum is one of the country's most amazing rivers. For admirers of magnificent nature, where man experiences humility in presence of all creation, it is a true wonder. This is one of the places in the south-west of Iceland where anglers are most likely to hook a large salmon. Indeed, some fishermen who have learned the secrets of the Stora Laxa are drawn back every year.

The upper beat (Beat 4) is without doubt one of the prettiest and most rugged salmon fishing sites in the country, and many anglers have been left breathless by its beauty on their first visit. This section is tough going and it is not recommended it for older or very young anglers. Fishing on Beat 4 is limited to 62 days per year.

Beat 3 is a more accessible area, where the river slows down and has many gorgeous fly-fishing places.

The lower beats (Beats 1 & 2 are combined) contain many of the river's best known pools. Access is easy to most of the fishing sites along these beats.

There are three fishing cabins on the Stora Laxa and each gives families or groups of friends privacy in their own fishing area. The upper and lower beats of the river are alloted four rods, while Beat 3 is restricted to only two rods.

Fishing tactics

The Stora Laxa can be fished with either double-handed or single-handed rods, with either floating or sinking lines. Medium-sized flies and tubes have proven particularly effective. The river holds some truly monster salmon and anglers are advised to use tackle that can withstand long, tough struggles.

Fishing cabin

There are 3 cabins on the river. The upper beat cabin (Beat 4) sleeps 10, the middle beat (Beat 3) sleeps 4, and the lower section (Beats 1 & 2) sleeps 8. The cabins have well-equipped kitchens and are ideally placed in attractive landscape settings, assuring privacy. The Stora-Laxa in Hreppum is one of the country's most amazing rivers.
