Überblick

The River Wear rises in the Pennines and is, in the main, a freestone spate river which has excellent runs of Sea Trout and Salmon. Rains in June and July 2017 saw runs of both species entering the river in good numbers during those months and indeed throughout the season.

Whilst those fishing for Salmon can have good prospects in many pools during the daylight hours, it is at night when Wear Anglers venture out for the enigmatic Sea Trout for which the river is justifiably renowned.

Bishop Auckland District Angling Club offer 16 miles of fishing from Witton Park Road Bridge downstream almost as far as Croxdale, Durham. There are a number of named pools and many good fish holding areas for migratory fish throughout the Club’s waters. Wading can be difficult in some areas. Chest waders are essential and you are strongly advised to cast a line for Brown Trout and Grayling during daylight hours in order to customise yourself with safe entry and exit points from the River.

Advice is always available from a friendly Club whose Membership Secretary is a mine of information with a wealth of knowledge about the river.

Recent years have seen an explosion in the Grayling population, and fish between 2 lb and 3 lb were caught during the 2017 season. Anglers are reporting good catches of Grayling of all ages throughout the Clubs waters. Good hatches of Fly life are also encouraging.

Those wishing to try their hand for the better resident Brown Trout will have greater success from dusk onwards when there is always the chance of sport with Sea Trout too.

Most legal methods of fishing are allowed, but the use of maggots and ground baiting is strictly banned. (See Club Rules.) Having booked your fishing on-line, you should have no problem defining the Club water using the map provided. It is recommended to plan ahead and seek advice from the Club before booking, they will be happy to offer help and advice on where and when to fish, together with the most productive methods.
