Combining your fishing trip with a lesson from a qualified casting instructor will help to maximize your time spent on the water, and ultimately improve your chances of catching more fish.
All forms of fly fishing benefit from good fly presentation in varied wind and weather conditions.
Regardless of your casting ability, starting a fishing trip under the expert guidance of an instructor will improve your casting technique and river skills, allowing you the opportunity to safely and effectively present your fly across the stream.
To make your time spent on the water more enjoyable, investing in some casting instruction at the beginning of your trip is money well spent. A list of recommended instructors can be found on this page. For instructors further afield please follow this link.
Guides: If you want to fish a location not familiar to you, then a guide can make all the difference between success and failure. By Provincial law, all anglers who aren't residents of New Brunswick must be under the supervision of a licensed guide when fishing on the Miramichi. The lodges or outfitters normally provide guides as part of their fee.
Guides will help you chose the right place to fish, make sure you have the right equipment and use the correct techniques. On top of that they will often provide transport, lunch and an endless supply of fishing knowledge, talk and enthusiasm.
A list of recommended guides can be found at this link (Information under construction.)
Third party instruction on beat: Be sure to check if your lodge allows instructors and/or guides on the beat. Never turn up with an instructor or a guide without having cleared it first, as this might cause bad feeling with the lodge which won't do much to help your trip. The guides provided by the lodges will usually be able to provide some level of instruction as part of their service. Many are very accomplished anglers and highly qualified instructors.
Miramichiers are generally a friendly bunch and are always eager to share their knowledge of fly fishing with inexperienced or beginner anglers. Most lodges in the area are family friendly and many offer nature excursions and other activities for those who do not care to chase fish all day.
Wading at most location along the rivers is quite safe and easy, thus it makes a great environment for learning to wade and cast a fly line. Many lodges and guides offer free instruction and advise to visiting anglers. For more formal instruction, salmon conservation organizations such as the Miramichi Salmon Association offer annual instruction camps for children. See the link below for more information.
