River management

The Caithness District Salmon Fishery Board has a statutory responsibility to protect and improve salmon and sea trout fisheries in its area.

The area comprises all the rivers of Caithness, including the Thurso, Dunbeath, Wick, Forss and Berriedale and Langwell Waters as well as coastal netting stations. The Pentland Firth lies to the north of the area and the Moray Firth to the east.

The River Thurso and the dual Berriedale/Langwell river system are Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) for Atlantic salmon under the European Union NATURA Agreement.

The Helmsdale District Fishery Board is a statutory body with particular responsibility for salmon and sea-trout and fishery protection in coastal waters.

The Board’s aim is to provide the maximum benefit to both the local community, tenants and visitors in enjoying this wonderful natural resource and landscape feature, consistent with maintaining and enhancing the fish population as per its statutory duty.

The Board undertakes habitat and fishery surveys in which its staff have been trained.

In conjunction with the government’s Rural Affairs Department the Board runs a fish-counter enabling the management to assess runs and adapt policies accordingly.

The Brora District Fishery Board covers Brora river.

The North District Fishery Board and the North West District Fishery Boards cover the vast Northern and North Western portions of the country where many rivers and lochs are located.
