River Nairn update 22nd September

At last we had heavy rain on Monday/Tuesday and the river rose almost 3 feet. Typically, it dropped away far too quickly and was back to summer level by Friday with the water just off the dry base following a year of low water.

Wednesday saw 8 grilse caught; Ewan Macdonald who had 2, Charlie Walker 1, Sandy Wallace had 3 and Ally Henderson had 2 and all were coloured. Thursday and Sandy Wallace had another 2 grilse.

Fingers crossed we get a good drop of rain in the next week and hopefully finish a challenging season with a few more fish landed.

River Nairn update 28th July

Finally some water on the Nairn..!

After a severe drought on the Nairn since April, with no water until now, we finally got a nice flood on tuesday, and the river rose to 1 metre on the Firhall gauge. It is the worst start to a season that anyone can remember.

On Wednesday the 1st fish of the season was caught by an outwith member Chris McWilliam who landed a nice grilse and wins the Peter Ramsey trophy. This was his 1st fish caught on the Nairn. It was a close thing for the cup as Sandy Wallace had a grilse 1/2 an hour later. Visitor Paul Niven fishing a Fishpal permit also had a grilse and Tackie Mckintosh  had an 8 lb salmon.

The river dropped away very quickly on thursday and Charlie Black had a grilse. Friday and Davie Campbell an Elgin fisher aged 84 had a nice grilse from Milton.  Low water prevailed afterwards and the catches were very disappointing indeed after the months of no water. All we can hope is that the main grilse runs are late.
