May Report – River Nith, Friars Carse Beat.

On the 20th May a guest at the Hotel had the first reported salmon from the beat a nice fish of about 10lb plus a 1 lb grayling.

This was followed the next day by a Scandinavian couple staying at the Hotel managed to catch  2 fish, a 10lb & 12lb fish.

These fish will have been caught on a falling water, I would suspect that had come into the beat on the lift.

I was there myself in April for 4 days and saw no salmon but whilst fishing for browns and any early sea trout we had some lovely sized Grayling come to the net.

Let’s hope we get more consistent water levels this year, which will encourage more fish to come though the beat.

If you’ve never fished Friars beat its worth a go, it gives you some nice varied water to fish from slow deep runs to some nice streamy water. Fly, spin or worm is allowed on the beat and if you need any information of where to fish then just give me a call, I’m happy to help out fellow anglers.

Note: The River Nith is a category 3 river and that all salmon are to be safely returned.

Please remember when fishing the beat to let the Hotel know of your catch return even if you’ve not been successful, it helps them in knowing how the beat is fishing.

Dates for the Residential 3 Day Fly Fishing Courses for the rest of the year are as follows:

July 20th to 22nd

September 14th to 16th

Tight lines.
