FishPal – River Don Update May 18th

River levels received a welcome lift last Friday due to heavy showers on the upper catchment. This rise appears to have assisted the downstream movement of most salmon smolts towards the sea, which is positive news. Salmon fishing has been slow in recent weeks, with only an occasional fish or two being caught across a small number of beats. Although lacking in quantity the quality of the fish landed has been excellent, with weights ranging from 10lb to 16lb.

A few sea trout are being landed off the lower river, its expected numbers will build over the coming weeks. Late evening sport has not fully commenced yet due to the continual cool Easterly winds appearing in the evening.

Brown trout fishing continues to be a hit or miss due to the overhead conditions, the blustery winds and colder water temperatures have curtailed surface activity, but the river is slowly coming alive with hatches of olive uprights, grannom and hawthorns appearing now. Given the right day and overhead conditions, some nice trout from 2-4lbs have been landed from various beats.

Looking ahead, the rest of the week seems set for an increase in air temperatures, this recent flush of new water will have helped move a few staler fish up into new pools and hopefully take a few back on the take again.

Any news or catches are always welcome please forward on to [email protected]

Tight lines,
