All salmon fishing on Glen Tanar beats is 100% catch and release in conjunction with the Dee Conservation Code 2022.
Fishing is from the top the top of the Island Pool to the bottom of the Waterside Pool.
The meeting point for the beat is the lay-by over-looking the Waterside Pool on the south side of the B976 south Deeside road 300 metres east of the large sawmill and 2km (1.2 miles) west of the entrance to Glen Tanar. There is a lay-by for car parking opposite the hut. All parties must meet at 9.00 am. Current Covid-19 guidelines should always be adhered to.
Access to the beat is by car on certain routes and on foot for the remainder. Access to the north side of Waterside Pool is through the Aboyne Gliding Club, where drivers must stop and check for aircraft before crossing the airstrip. Care is to be taken to avoid disturbance or damage to livestock or crops.
Fishing system: The beat has two periods, spring, and summer. The spring fishing period is from 1st March – 3rd July (4 rods). The summer fishing period is from 5th July - 30 September 2020 (2 rods). Fishers have access to both banks for fishing. In the spring period, the beat is split into four sections. Fishers rotate round the sections daily. The changeover to the following day’s water takes place at 5.00 p.m. each day. In the summer fishing period, only 2 rods normally fish the beat, from both banks. Should water conditions allow a day permit system for 4 rods may be introduced. When there are 2 rods, there are no restrictions on sections or timings. When there are 4 rods, the spring rotation system will apply.
Fishing etiquette: When starting in a pool a minimum separation from fishers on the opposite bank of one hundred metres upstream or fifty metres downstream should be maintained. Fishers should maintain a steady progress through a pool. Fishers should avoid other fishermen when they are playing a fish. Fishers must also respect other people’s use of the water or land they are on and act responsibly. Dogs are not permitted on the riverbank unless kept under control.
Rod sharing: rod sharing is not allowed.
Fishing methods: Fly fishing only is permitted. All hooks should be barbless, or the barbs crimped. Treble hooks are not permitted.
Injured or damaged fish: All injured or damaged fish are to be handed to the proprietor or his representative.
Ghillie: If the services of a ghillie are provided or arranged in advance, they will be provided from 9am to 5pm Monday – Saturday. The ghillie oversees the fishery when present and instructions from the ghillie or other member of staff must be complied with. A minimum of one person must be nominated as the contact with the estate and contact details must be provided in advance to either the estate or the ghillie for each day.
Catch returns: Correct detailed records, showing dates on which fish were caught and killed, and which were released, their weights, names of pools, and from which bank taken, must be submitted to this office. These records are normally kept by the ghillie in the spring period, but it is your responsibility to ensure that appropriate records are kept for your fishing party.
Safety & Disease Control: All fishers must comply with all health and safety measures outlined in the Covid-19 Fishing Instructions and Angling Safety Sheet copies of which will be sent to you with the confirmation of your booking. All fishers must supply and wear a suitable buoyancy aid while fishing. All anglers are requested to read and act upon the biosecurity measures in place for each beat to prevent the introduction of Gyrodactylus salaris and other diseases to the Dee. This will involve the disinfection of waders and landing nets prior to fishing.
Subletting: You cannot sublet the fishing you book without our permission and then only by private arrangement and at the same prices and conditions as for this booking.
