Westerhall

A private beat of the Black Esk lies between the Burnfoot and Bentpath bridges about five miles upstream from Langholm. The beat comprises just over two miles of bank -approximately one and a half miles of which lie on the North side. The river runs relatively straight through this section and there are no deep pools. However, there are a number of very enticing runs. Access to the fishing is, at times, hampered by steep banks and forestry which reaches right to the riverside.

A lack of focus on fishing in recent years has allowed willow scrub to overgrow much of the fishable sections of the beat. However, a recent program of clearing has opened up a number of prospects that have remained relatively unfished for many years. The result is a beautiful and wild stretch of river which has produced one or two very exciting fish for which the Border Esk is so well known.
