Overview

Upper Islamouth and Meikleour House is a picturesque double bank beat set in the stunning grounds of Meikleour House. The beat commences at the junction of the Tay & Isla Rivers and extends for approximately 1.7 miles upstream. It is perhaps for the Islamouth and Castle Pools that Meikleour are most famous and to follow the path to these pools is to follow in the footsteps of many angling greats. Meikleour welcome the expert and novice alike and can provide tuition if required. In 2020 the beat conducted extensive bank engineering work: the result is not only environmentally beneficial and visually superb, it also means improved and easier bank fishing with new areas not accessible before.

14 named pools can offer fly fishing and spinning from both bank and boat, as well as harling when conditions allow. Bank fishing is without a personal ghillie, however a ghillie will be available at the start of the day to show you the best places. Boat fishing is for a minimum of two rods. With sufficient notice Meikleour can also arrange for a personal bank ghillie.

Pools such as the March Pool, Boxwood Bush, House Pool, Apple Haugh and Islamouth offer great sport in high water levels, while in lower water you can fish the Tunnel Stream, Tunnel Hole, Boxwood Boils, Cormorant Tree and Castle Pools.

The beat have fly and spinning rods available for guests to borrow (flies and lures can be purchased at the hut) and head ghillie Calum McRoberts is always happy to advise in advance of your trip on the best tackle for the conditions.

The newly renovated Ferry Cottage boathouse is spacious and extremely well appointed, with a kitchen, a large oak banquet table, stove and WC. The Meikleour House fishing hut is a little gem that can be booked at no extra cost for private parties.

Accommodation can also be arranged on the estate at award winning hotel, The Meikleour Arms (AA Pub of Year2019/20) . The Meikleour Arms offers 11 stylish bedrooms and serves renowned country food. The hotel also has serviced cottages (1, 2 and 3 bedrooms) in the village and at Walled Garden near the River. Dogs stay for free and are allowed in some parts of the restaurant

Why you need to fish here

An enjoyable visit to a pretty beat. High water and strong winds were not helpful, but bank fishing was still possible. Renovated banks are impressive, but in parts restrict sensible access to wading.

Really good day where Ian the Ghillie looked after us really well, sadly he can’t do anything about the weather. We enjoyed it thoroughly and will be back hopefully with more water and more fish.

A great experience at the Meikleour - Stunning stretch of river beautifully maintained by the ghillies and the estate. Some brilliant salmon pools.

Thank you so much for the best couple of days, we really appreciated the work you both put in. All very sad to be driving back down south.

This beat has big wide pools and “runs”, excellent for spinning
