Lune Rivers Trust manages three fishing beats at the bottom of the River Lune, which are owned by the Environment Agency. In return for managing these beats, the Environment Agency assigns any fees from the purchase of fishing permits for these 3 beats to Lune Rivers Trust. Apart from a small admin fee for the online booking platform, these fees are used exclusively to fund LRT activities which are of direct benefit to the angling community. For example, this year fishing permit fees received in 2019 & 2020 were used to replace LRT’s disabled fishing platform (which was destroyed in flooding).
It is strongly encouraged that all anglers (not just those fishing LRT’s beats) to submit a catch return at the completion of your day’s fishing. Your catch returns provide invaluable information to help the EA, the angling associations, and LRT to assess the health of fish stocks on the River Lune system. Considering the current state of salmon stocks, this information is more valuable than ever.
Halton Top Beat
Halton top beat has long slow deep pools, which are not suited to salmon fly fishing except in high water. It is a very good high water beat and many fish are caught in spinning when other beats are not fishable. Salmon can be caught on the fly during high flows, as the river levels fall shrimp fishing is more successful. Fly-fishing for sea trout at night works well.
There are twelve rods available daily. Left bank from 50 metres above forge weir to Escow Beck. Salmon fly and artificial lure only until June 16th this is a regional byelaw, all legal methods thereafter. Coarse fishing is available on this beat between the 1st of November and the 14th of March. Parking is available in the Hermitage car park on the Halton road. No wading or fishing beyond the central line of the river on the Halton beats.
