Kincardine Beat is in the middle of the River Dee approximately 30 miles from the sea and close to the village of Kincardine O'Neil. The beat has superb fly-fishing water which fishes well in a wide range of heights. At normal water levels, much of the fishing is from the bank.
The March and Calm Pools, Lucky Hole, Whinbush and Clay Pot are all sheltered from cold northerly winds. Downstream the Willow Bed, Lower Willow Bed, Bend and Boat and Village Pools are all encouraging casts. In higher water you can even try your luck in the Ford. Almost the whole of the 1.25 miles of water is fishable. The beat fishes very well with a small fly and floating line most of the year.
The riverbank is a treasury of wildflowers, with oyster catchers, curlews, dippers and long tailed tits among the many birds to look out for. Watch out too for the otters and deer.
Rod-for-rod Kincardine Beat provides some of the best sea-trout fishing on the Dee. In the summer while some sea trout are caught during the daytime by salmon fishers, the best results come from the activity of skilled and dedicated sea-trout fishermen around midnight.
A splendid fishing hut is located approximately mid-point along the beat overlooking the rushing river at the Bend. It is spacious and well-equipped with running water, log-stove, composting toilet and BBQ. It has large windows facing the river and an even larger covered verandah. A picturesque secondary hut with log fire commands the view over the upper pools.
There is no ghillie on the beat. If required, the Estate Office can provide the name of a competent local ghillie for you to make your own arrangements with directly.
The track leading to the beat is just off the A93 trunk road. Cars can be parked at the main hut and a vehicle track leads from there upstream towards the upper pools. There is a track to the upper hut and parking in a layby on the A93.
We operate a 3 bedroom (sleeps 6) self-catering cottage in Kincardine O'Neil within walking distance of the beat - for more information click here. For larger house parties of six or more only, you can stay in luxurious and friendly comfort at Kincardine Castle. A variety of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses can also be found locally.
Along with a large selection of everyday items, the local village shop also sells hot and cold food to take away – ideal for lunches and snacks at the hut. The beat is located between the towns of Banchory and Aboyne which between them have all the essential services you would expect.
Full tackle hire is available from Orvis in Banchory or Somers in Aberdeen. George Strachan Ltd in Aboyne and Kincardine O'Neil Village Store also stock flies and other fishing sundries. Please note: waders are considered essential for the safe return of fish to the river.
