Overview

Laxa in Leirarsveit is one of Iceland's most prolific salmon rivers. It is an excellent river for fly fishing, with an interesting variety of pools. It has a strong and loyal following of both American and British fishers who come back year after year. The average catch per rod makes it one of Iceland's top ten salmon rivers.

The river is very 'fisherman friendly' where access to the most of the 45 pools is very easy. Divided into seven beats, each stretch has its own charisma with a mix of slow and fast running water and different landscape. Some of the pools are full of fish throughout the seaon and are therefore considered by some as Iceland's best fly fishing pools. The average size of salmon is around 6lbs but every year there are some specimens caught weighing around 20lbs and quite a few in the 10-16lbs range..

The clarity of the river provides sight fishing opportunities as the salmon can be seen to lie on the many gravel beds. Most of the pools can be fished from bank, although shallow wading is preferred in some pools to improve presentation of the fly.

The Laxa is usually fished with light tackle, single-handed rods, no. 7-8 with a floating line and small flies. Heavier tackle is used in higher water conditions. The river is ideal for hitching or using micro tubes and most of the fish caught will rise to the fly. Smaller flies are traditional, with single and double hooks, size 10-14. Productive flies usually include: hitch tubes, micro tubes, Red Frances, Green Butt, Stoats' Tail, Collie Dog and Black Sheep.

Sea trout fishing in the estuary under the midnight sun with will give any serious game angler a rememberable time. From mid summer sea trout run into the river and can be caught along certain stretches. The sea trout weigh up to 6lbs.

Freelance, experienced English speaking guides are provided for groups or can be arranged for single rods. Rod sharing partners are welcomed. The river is only half an hour's drive from Reykjavik so all kinds of activities for non fishing partners can be very easily arranged.

Full service accomodation is provided in a comfortable lodge which has eight twin-bedded rooms with bathrooms. It also comprises a large sitting room, hot tub and a comfortable dining area where gourmet meals are served.
