Overview

Styford beat is situated between Bywell and Corbridge on the River Tyne.

The fishing at Styford has been enjoyed by the same family for over 100 years. In 1922 a 42 1/2lb salmon was caught on a Silver Wilkinson fly after an four hour battle. It remains the record fish for the beat and one of the largest ever caught on the river.

Although all fishing is accessed from the North bank most of the beat is double banked. Access is via private estate tracks passing through parkland and arable fields.

The fishing is suitable for all ages and all abilities. A plan of some of the pools can be accessed by clicking the fishery map link in the next column.

Salmon are caught throughout the year with February, March and April seeing some good catches in recent years.

Fishing is restricted to fly although spinners are allowed in high water conditions. Chest wading experience is preferable but not essential. It is strongly recommended that a wading pole and buoyancy device are used at all times when wading.

The fishing has benefited from a programme of riverbank improvements implemented over the last 10 years. 2011 and 2012 saw successive record years. The fishing hut is adjacent to the parking area and ideal for picnics and catering can arranged through the Styford Estate. COVID-19  The Fishing Hut is open but must be wiped clean following use with the provided disinfectant. Styford is within 30 minutes of both Newcastle train station and airport.
