Sir Edward's Lake

Five minutes walk from Capheaton Village is Sir Edwards Lake. Built by Sir Edward Swinburne in 1750 the Lake offers outstanding Brown Trout fishing.

The Lake consists of 35 acres of still water with weed beds on the perimeter. The Lake is stocked every three or four years and, because the natural feed is so abundant, the trout grow to great weights. Fish of over 7lbs are not uncommon. Fishing is fly only and generally with a floating or intermediate line. On the whole, the trout like to take just below the surface, so wet flies are probably the most successful.
There is a single boat which comfortably accommodates two rods. There is a rudimentary boathouse which serves as a good spot to get out of rain and have a picnic.

Guests are shown the Lake by either Willy Browne-Swinburne or another member of the team. Initially it is important that you are shown how the boat is accessed and to provide you with keys and any other guidance you may require.

Life jacket recommended.

Why you need to fish here

Sir Edward's Lake has never been let in any commercial way since it was created in 1750.  Apart from being unutterably beautiful it offers still water Brown Trout fishing of the highest quality.  Until now fishing has only been enjoyed by family and close friends.  This experiment, which offers the opportunity to fish to a wider audience, will last as long as those who take it; appreciate it.

Available with fishing is a range of outstanding holiday accommodation on a self catering basis within 5 minutes walk of the Lake itself.  Full details of these are available on Capheaton Hall's website.
