Aperçu

The New Galloway Angling Association beat on the Water of Ken lies for two miles south of Ken Bridge near New Galloway. Being under the influence of the Galloway Hydro Scheme, this beat provides the best fishing at times when the Power Stations upstream are generating. The beat is normally most productive for salmon during and on the fall from a generating period.

Current conservation rules require all salmon caught to be released.

Trout can also be caught within this stretch. There are also various coarse fish caught throughout the beat. These pass upstream from the vast Loch Ken which contains an abundance of coarse fish including pike, bream, dace and perch.

Wading deep into the river channel should be avoided or at least practiced with precaution and should only be done after familiarising yourself with channel variations experienced during times of power generation upstream. Hydro operations upstream at Earlstoun and Glenlee Power Stations can be frequent and periodic throughout the daytime during times of high rainfall, or for a single short spell once daily in times of water shortage. The New Galloway Angling Association welcome visiting anglers to their beat on the River Ken.
