Latest from Ian Neale, Altyre

Following a very difficult spring period on the Findhorn of extremely dry weather, the catchment was finally hit with some much-needed rainfall. Following good river levels and rainfall, the river reopened on the 2nd June.

At Altyre, we welcomed anglers on Wednesday 4th anticipating fresh fish entering the river. In the morning, things were quiet with just a few pulls / grabs on the fly. However following lunchtime, small pods of fresh fish were making their way into the beat, and Andrew Johnstone hooked and landed a cracking 12lbr from the Garden Pool. This was his first Altyre salmon, very well done to you Andrew!

On Thursday, water levels remained steady and the Forres gauge sat at 10”. Again, the morning was strangely quiet on the fish front, however following lunch there was a break in conditions with some rain showers which seemed to freshen things up. Late afternoon, Geoff Holloway intercepted a lovely fish of around 12lbs in the neck of Roan on the lower beat. Another pristine example of a Findhorn salmon.

Salmon have been reported throughout the system, with fish landed at Glenferness, Lethen and Drynachan. A positive week, and hopefully the start of a good summer season for anglers on the Findhorn.

Tight lines,

Ian Neale. www.speycaster.net
