Latest from the Annan August 28th
Although a bit late, the last couple of weeks have seen the arrival of our summer salmon and grilse run when we finally had our first decent spate since spring, in August!
On the back of this first lift, reports of fresh run fish quickly came in from the lower river beats with good sized grilse making up most of these reports. Catches continued after further heavy rain and high water with reports of fresh grilse and summer salmon throughout both the lower and middle beats.
After an initial run of fresh fish on the first couple of lifts, there were also plenty of reports of coloured salmon and grilse suggesting that the runs of fresh fish into the river were over, however, following further rain and high water, fresh fish have continued to be reported caught and seen and after a very poor start to the salmon season, once the river drops back in, we should have a good finish to the season as summer ends and we move into autumn.
Recent notable catches include a great day for Graham Southam who landed three good sized grilse from the Island Pool on Newbie Beat and Adrian Parr with two salmon of 10lb and 11lb from Howes Corner on Newbie Beat caught just after the tide, Jamie Strachan with a nice grilse and a salmon from Hoddom while spinning in a falling water and local angler George Renwick who opened his Annan account this summer reporting nine salmon and grilse so far and local angler and RFT season permit holder John Cameron with four grilse between 4lb and 6lb plus an 8lb salmon during a week of fishing at Royal Four Towns when the middle river had dropped in.
So, there seems to be plenty of fish about. The current problem is that the rain we’ve all been waiting for has forgotten to stop!!!
Due to all the recent heavy rain, over the past week the river has been mostly unfishable and with further heavy rain and flooding over the last two days, the river is still very big and unfishable. It’s likely that the river won’t drop in fully until the end of the week when the forecast suggests we will see a few days of good weather from Friday and over the weekend so if you're looking to book salmon fishing on the Annan, please double check the weather forecast and river levels before booking.
