Blackwood is situated 6 miles from Dumfries on the A76 and offer two miles of double-bank fishing with 12 named pools. There is good access to the river with plenty of parking, a loo and an undercover lunch area.
There is a need to wade on some pools but the wading is mostly gentle with a gravel river bed.
A double handed rod is recommended.
Blackwood operates a syndicate throughout the early part of the year followed by day lets for six rods, three on each of the lower and upper beats for the last three months of the season. See map.
There are also two house rods that will be very lightly fished. The beat itself is a stunning stretch of river with a variety of different pools. The Forest Head and Craig pools are amongst some of the best holding pools on the Nith and fish particularly well with the fly. There are also very good pools that hold sea trout throughout the season.
A marker at the old bridge indicates the spinning level. Above the marker, spinning and worming are permitted as well as fly, but below the marker at 9.00 am, fly only is permitted. The Estate do not allow worming in November. All the sea trout over 3lb must be returned.
There are a range of hotels, B&Bs, holiday cottages and camp sites in the area.
