Tyne Update May 6th

April was a frustrating month with high water levels spoiling lots of days for would-be Tyne anglers including a 13ft flood on the 11th. The levels were due to a mixture of high releases and rain. Since then the reservoir at Kielder has now dropped to a level resulting in only the base flow release of 1.32 cumecs and the river levels have dropped considerably making many more beats and pools accessible.

In terms of catches, Bywell are currently leading the way with fish now being caught from a variety of pools on the beat as levels have dropped. Recent success include Barry Marshall with an 8lb fish from the fish pass pool on a Tosh Monkey, Steven Keeney had a 14lber from the same pool and on the same fly. Also from the fish pass Kieran Holliday landed an 8lb salmon and Alex Brown a 9lb fish also on a Willie Gunn variant fly. As levels dropped a bit Daniel Price had a 14lb fish from the Bridge Pool on a Cascade, Matt Will got a 10lber on a Sunray  from Island Pool, Shaun Dodd got an 11lber from Broomhaugh and finally Daniel Price landed a fish of 14lbs from Upper Church and Paul Robson got a 14ber from the Bridge Pool today.

Further up the main river a few fish have also been landed (and lost) including Andy Blyth who got a 17lber on fly near Hexham.

Please do remember that these fish are extremely precious and look after them properly - see CAST below.

Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST)

All fish landed should be kept in water in a net and handled as little as possible before careful release. Spring fish particularly are very precious and each one is a special catch to be well looked after. Please remember they will be in the river a very long time before spawning and deserve your respect. The latest guidance on Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST)  has been adopted by many Tyne beats and syndicates and can be found at Conservation Angling for Salmon on the Tyne (CAST) | Tyne Rivers Trust
