Freeburn is a scenic one-mile stretch of left bank fishing on the River Findhorn, located near Tomatin in the Scottish Highlands. This classic Highland beat supports a maximum of three rods at any one time, offering an intimate and rewarding experience for salmon anglers.
The beat boasts several well-established pools and a couple of productive runs. Over the years, it has produced many fine fish, including specimens well into the 20lb range.
Fishing at Freeburn follows the river's seasonal rhythms. The spring run typically begins in late April to early May, as the water begins to warm after the winter months. Grilse start arriving from mid-June through to the end of July, while the main salmon run begins in late August and often continues into September.
In recent seasons, August and particularly September have proven highly productive, with notable catches on a dropping river. As a spate river, the Findhorn—and Freeburn in particular—fishes best on a falling water after a fresh spate, making timing and conditions key to success.
