Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

May 2021 - No. 13

Some large fish have entered our river systems this month. Findhorn, Spey, Tay, Tweed, Cumbrian Eden have all caught fish over 20lb.

Earlier this week I was contacted by the owner of Fetternear beat on the River Don informing me that local angler Graham Reid had caught two fish at 25lb (pictured) and 19lb on a 1/2" pot bellied pig. A day's salmon fishing on this beat until the end of the season is £30, and the trout fishing at £15 is also exceptional.

Anglers caught fish as far up the system at Ruan Ruarie on the River Garry. The River Tummel enjoyed some good sport including five to rods fishing Loch Faskally and eleven fish to rods fishing Portnacraig Pitlochry water. Fish were caught on the Upper Tay, including Loch Tay at Kenmore. Anglers caught four fish on Farleyer upper and one on Farleyer lower, one on Lower Bolfracks beat. Edraynate caught five fish the largest at 19lb's - read more.

Samantha and Sandy Datta said "Some ghillies reported seeing fish running hard from time to time, which was encouraging" and "With less than one full week of the Scottish spring salmon fishing season remaining, time is running out to land that elusive springer. The River Tay might just be the place to do it!"

You might just end May on a high by landing some sparkling River Tay spring silver. Find fishing.

River Spey

Mark Cockburn fishing Brae Beat 5 on Monday before the river rose 2 feet.

The week actually started really well with some beats recording big catches on Monday. However, river levels then rose and fluctuated over the rest of the week, peaking at over 3ft on Friday. With good water temperatures, salmon were on the move. In these conditions the middle to upper river typically performs better, as the fish move through the bottom beats fairly quickly - read more.

As with previous weeks, many of the salmon caught were sealiced or very fresh. Find Spey Fishing.

Customer Feedback

Gordon Castle - Excellent Ghillie with great knowledge and advice on all aspects of fishing. Hut and banks always clean and tidy.

Castle Grant 1 - Salmon were in running mode and as such were just nipping away at the fly. Lightly hooked and lost six salmon and caught a 7lb sea trout. Good description of the fishable pools provided to the guests, and everyone got a fair shot at the most likely productive pools.

River Dee

Edward Humphrey from Dinnet and Deecastle.

You would be forgiven for thinking that this week was at the end of October rather than the end of May. Cold temperatures, challenging blustery winds, a large rise in river levels, hardly fine spring weather. Despite these challenges, the river reported another good week, with seventy salmon recorded on Fishpal for the week and eleven sea trout, with the largest salmon coming off Aboyne Castle and Aboyne Water beats - each recording fish to 15lb - read more.

The second half of the week is set to be drier, and temperatures are to climb to the mid-teens. Fortunately, the Dee clears quickly, and fishing can still be had in high water - find fishing.

Customer Feedback

Woodend - Lovely water in a secluded spot. Taking the beat for three to six days with the cottage would provide a great break. Owner was away when we fished. Communication was excellent and detailed instructions left in rod room. A quality beat.

Birse - A throughly enjoyable day! Drew knows the water very well! Shame it was rising very quickly! Overall an awesome day with a fantastic ghillie.

Lower Crathes W Durris - Due to Covid restrictions the huts were closed, but I have no doubt they would have been as excellent as the rest of the beat. The banks were superbly maintained and Robert and Daniel were a pleasure to be "ghillied" by. The beat is a delight to fish.
