March 2021 - No. 7

This week sees lockdown restrictions starting to ease in England allowing families and friends to mix in groups for the first time in weeks.

With government guidance in England allowing you to travel, we wanted to remind you that travel between Scotland and England is still banned by the Scottish Government, unless you have a 'reasonable excuse' such as going to work - read more.

We would like to remind all anglers before booking a fishing permit to check that you are fishing within the current rules - read more.

During the Easter break the office will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday. There will be very limited support answering Help Centre messages, so please, if it is not urgent, then it would be appreciated if you could leave this till we are all back on Tuesday 6th April.

North Esk

Fish Esks | Fishing Permits | Accommodation | Help Centre

One of 15 fish caught on Canterland this month.

Once the river settled to a steady level of 1ft 5in to 1ft, the river has fished extremely well with most beats reporting fish daily. The river is holding a good flow of water and more importantly a good head of springers - read more.

We are seeing fish in most the pools every day and more importantly catching a few, very encouraging to be catching fish with sea lice on them and to confirm that what we are seeing on a daily basis is fresh running fish, including some resident fish. No kelts caught for a while now so when that line tightens it's likley to be a fresh run bar of silver - find fishing.

Anglers fishing Canterland have reported 15 fish so far this month. The beat is one of the most productive sections on the North Esk offering a delightful balance of fly and spinning water dependant on water height - read more.

Eden Lacy Beat has salmon and trout fishing and two holiday cottages.

When anglers were able to cast a line, Low House had the first fish of the season on the fly, a twelve pounder caught by David Noble on a Willie Gunn on the 4th March. On the 20th March Mike Noble fishing a Willie Gunn caught an eight pounder on the same beat.

Not the Eden's best start to the 2021 season, it is nothing to do with numbers of fish in the river - read more.

The sea-liced fish was weighed at 18lbs before being returned and was landed in the fish pass pool below the pass. The following week Ian Greenset (pictured) landed two fish at 13lbs and 14lbs from Bywell both on a copper Cascade tube fly, a morning he won't forget in a hurry - read more.

River Tay

Derek Main fishing Cargill.

There have been some cracking Tay springers landed in recent days. Things got off to a flyer last week on the Tay system when on Monday thirteen fish were landed which was great to see. In actual fact last week ended up being the most productive week of the season so far and hopefully, this is a sign of things to come as we move towards Easter and beyond - read more.

Loch Tay has produced some stunning fish in the past few weeks and there was a lovely fish landed from the loch on Tuesday. The magnificent eight pounder was caught by Mr Grant Tigwell and on his first run down the loch. There were also a couple landed from the loch on Saturday including a fine sixteen pounder - read more.

22lber caught on Dunkeld House.

Local rod Alan Lumsden had a week to remember catching the first springer for Upper Redgorton and then two days later a 22lber (pictured) from Dunkeld House - find fishing.

Anglers wishing to fish the Tay this year more availability for has been added this week - Find Fishing.

Congratulations Ken Reid fishing Aboyne Water.

Several beats recorded their first sea liced fish as pods of these springers entered the system throughout the week - read more.

Many of the beats picked up a single fish this week with Crathes on three and Cairnton two for the week. With low fishing effort for the week Lower Blackhall and Inchmarlo also had a single fish. Ghillie Martin Robson landed a 6lber on Wednesday from the Roe Pot. Find Dee fishing.

We have some big spring tides this week (up to 4.6m) which will help lift some fish into the system. Intermediate lines and slow sink tips could be an option paired with the usual gold bodied willie guns, monkey's and black and yellow tubes - read more.

River Spey

Fish Spey | Fishing Permits | Tackle Shops | Accommodation | Help Centre

Ronnie Fraser fishing Wester Elchies.

The general consensus up and down the river is that the spring run is building and the river has seen a good early run of salmon thus far. This is obviously great news for the anglers who are within the travel boundaries as there's plenty choice on where to fish and it would appear that all parts of the river now offer a good chance of encountering a springer - read more.

It's always an encouraging sign to see spring salmon showing as they enter a pool or migrate upstream. In the colder conditions, which we have in March, sightings can be few so it's very heartening to hear that fish are being seen on most beats, most days – this is usually an indication there's a few about - find fishing currently on FishSpey.
