Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

January 2021 - No. 02

Welcome to the FishPal newsletter.

SEPA, who provide our Scottish river level data have been hit by a serious ransomware attack, which appears to have crippled most of their systems including their data feeds. Hence we will probably not get any more river level data from them until they rebuild their systems, which may take a very long time. More details can be found on our System Status page.

With the new season starting, we didn't want to be without any river level data, so we have come up with a temporary solution, using data texted by volunteers on the riverbank. You can see this already running on the River Tay (NB you may need to clear your browser's cache to see the new table properly) .

We will shortly be adding it to the Tweed and Dee and any other river we can get volunteers for. We are deeply grateful to those volunteers. If you would like to join them by helping on your own river please email me at [email protected]

Hopefully normal service will resume soon, but in the meantime I hope this temporary fix helps you out.

Plight of Atlantic Salmon

From pollution to climate change and over-extraction, the world's waterways are under assault. And the plight of the Atlantic salmon tells the story.

Many years ago, I stood mesmerised by the flowing waters of the River Ettrick in the Scottish town of Selkirk. The place was alive with leaping fish, an astonishing sight as salmon migrating from seas off Greenland and Iceland leapt upstream over the town weir in their dozens. The wild fish were coming back to their home waters to spawn, as they have done for millennia - read more.
