Finavon Castle Season Report

Sara Staples with her fish caught on the last few casts of the day.

Finavon Castle had an outstanding summer run of salmon and grilse throughout June and July on the South Esk.

The sport at times was quite energetic, with one being able to fish most of the pools in serious expectation rather than hope. The fish were a mixture of summer salmon, which were caught up to about 13lbs, and solid, stocky grilse with big shoulders between about 5lbs and 7lbs. More often than not these fish were chrome bright, festooned with sea lice and eager to take whatever was put in front of them - read more.

2020 saw 4 fish caught between August and the end of October which tipped the weigh net at a fraction over 20lbs, as well as several others in the mid to high teens, and a few other big ones lost - read more.

Grayling Fishing

Grayling Permits | England & Scotland | Help Centre

"Grayling are among the most beautiful and most respected freshwater fishes in the northern hemisphere. Their beauty; their habit of testing almost anything, including the angler, on the surface of the water; their shoaling instinct; the tendency to 'corkscrew' when hooked and fight seemingly forever, make them a truly attractive and sporting fish." Quote from the Grayling Society.

During the last few years we have an increased number of grayling permits available. You can now purchase permits for the Clyde, Nith, Tay, Annan, Tweed, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Test and Itchen. Grayling Fishing Permits.

Throughout July, salmon continued to be reported on all the lower beats as well as good sized grilse (6/7lb) and this continued into August helped by regular rain and good fishing conditions. It was good to see the lower beats so busy with anglers. Some beats fully booked and reporting fish most days when fishable.

By the end of the summer most of the lower beats were already on course for a far better season than in recent years with two of the best months of the season still to come! Read more.

It's grayling season on the Annan with most of the river now open for winter grayling tickets (Upper Annandale Angling Association starts 1st December). For more information and to check grayling fishing availability visit FishAnnan.

Sea Trout Book By Steffan Jones

It has been a while since a new book on sea trout fishing graced our bookshelves. Whilst the fish haven't changed over this time, what we have available to us in order to pursue them certainly has. As things modernise, we become better equipped and more successful in our approach.

Sea trout are mysterious at the best of times, but you would be hard pushed to find a more sporting species to target and hook on rod and line. To those that have sampled this pleasure it soon becomes an addiction, especially the night fishing aspect, which is totally unique and different to most other forms of fly fishing - read more.
