Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

October 2020 - Number 39

Tom Carter caught up with 10 year old James (pictured) and his dad Ian Wynn last week at Glenormiston, River Tweed. In the Summer holidays he tried salmon fishing for the first time. Fishing Newtyle Beat under the guidance of head ghillie Andy Gunn he lost 3 fish and landed his first salmon within 45 minutes.

His dad said "He thought fishing for salmon was easy and he's now experiencing the ups and downs. He is totally hooked and loves being on any river."

James with his dad, Ian, on Newtyle Beat River Tay.

Since casting his first line for salmon James has fished the Rivers' Don, Dee, Tay and Tweed. Next year it's the Spey in Spring, fishing with his Grandad who grew up on Speyside.

Like James and his dad, anglers across the country are enjoying some memorable fishing trips and catching some big salmon as well. To celebrate the achievement of catching and releasing a fish of a lifetime we would encourage anglers of all ages to enter the following prestigious awards for salmon fishing in the UK.

If you are looking to fit in a last minute trip we have had some COVID Cancellations on prime beats on Tweed for October and November. Find Fishing.

During the coming weeks more 2021 availability will be added by owners, so don't forget to register for a Rod Alert and keep an eye on the Latest 2021 Fishing Availability.

Neil Lobban FishTyne Reporter, Guide AAPGAI Casting Instructor.

As we enter the last week of the season there are fish well spread throughout but few fresh ones. Some large "crocs" have been landed recently with a 26lb fish from Watersmeet as well as several others above the 20lb mark. As the vast majority of fish will be released to go on to spawn please use appropriate tackle to land fish quickly and handle them as little as possible, keeping fish in a net and in the water.

Recent catches have been steady, particularly from the upper main river, with a number of bigger fish starting to appear in returns. These include a 23lbs fish from Bywell as well as one at 25lbs for Josh Ystenes from Dilston. Malcolm Patterson from Tynemouth was also in the twenties with a 21lbs salmon also from the main Tyne - read more.

Congratulations to FishTyne Reporter Neil Lobban (pictured) who has just been awarded the AAPGAI Master qualification. To achieve this standard takes years of hard work, and for many an attainment that is beyond their grasp. His three highly experienced and rigorous assessors were very impressed with the level of theoretical knowledge and practical ability in (for example) client organisation, health and safety, fish biology and ecology, equipment, casting, fishing and fish welfare that Neil consistently demonstrated throughout this lengthy and demanding examination.

Sandy Datta fishing Canterland, North Esk.

North and South Esk. A great first day on the North Esk at Canterland for Sam and Sandy Datta. They lost four fish, including a bar of silver, and Sandy landed a 15lber. If you wish to fish the North and South Esk before they close this Saturday you can find some availability online, including 2021 availability - find fishing permits.

River Annan. Good numbers of salmon reported so far from the lower river (and good numbers of fish holding on the lower river) the middle and upper beats have also been producing fish recently when anglers have been out, especially after a lift in water. With two recent spates there should now be plenty of salmon on the middle and upper beats and the upper river in particular will come into its own during the final few weeks of the season - read more.

Middle Ettrick. Bowhill Estate have caught 21 salmon in October. This stretch of water offers some of the best fishing on the Ettrick - read more.

Catch Returns

When you book a fishing permit with FishPal at the end of your trip we send you a customer feedback request and ask you to report your catches whether you were successful or not. This is hugely important for fisheries that do not have a ghillie or guide.

You can check your feedback and comments within your angler login details on FishPal. If you need a feedback form resending or help creating a angler login please email Anne at [email protected]
