Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

Newsletter No 34

September 2020

As river temperatures start to cool down, fish will become more aggressive and varying your approach could make all the difference now. Take a moment to consider flies, tackle and tactics as we officially enter Autumn today.

We know that local knowledge and the help of a guide or ghillie will definitely improve your chances of connecting with a fish.

Stuart Ralph and his wife Carole had a great trip to the Borders last week. They are indebted to all the helpful anglers they met and particularly the ghillie, Peter Kinstry. Peter was absolutely outstanding providing a tour of the river and meeting up at the end of the day to show them other beats on the Border Esk. A brilliant day's fishing and a salmon at 10lbs caught on a pot belly pig - Willow Pool Border Esk.

Kate Flemming in Blairgowrie is a traditional fishing and field sports retailer, that stocks everything you need for a fishing trip in Autumn.

Salmon have eluded Mitch Cannon's flies for two months now, so his friend Chris Proven kindly tied him a few and he caught a fish! Mitch says "I am ever so grateful for someone to take an interest in my endeavours and to gift me home tied flies and to Andy Gunn, ghillie, for all his help and advice" - Newtyle Beat, River Tay.

Anglers fishing the Spey have seen plenty of fish, but the bright conditions made catching them rather difficult. The feedback is from anglers who fished Kinermony, Delagyle and Grantown Association. They all said the Spey is a beautiful place to fish and they will be returning - River Spey.

Anglers are enjoying some excellent fishing on the River Annan. Feedback for Four Royal Towns, it's a great beat! The Annan is an up and coming salmon river, with big fish and really good numbers caught on a weekly basis. Will definitely be coming back! Fished the water for one day and caught three salmon, biggest at 21lb. River Annan.

Autumn salmon flies from Caledonia Fly Company.

Customers fishing the Kyle of Sutherland, Glencassley last week said it's a "stunningly beautiful spot! We didn't see it at its best as the water level was very low and we had bright sunshine. Saw quite a few fish in the deeper pools. Would love to fish it after a spate!" Kyle of Sutherland.

From this week we will be sharing with you regular updates from Fisheries Management Scotland. In this weeks newsletter there is important news about escaped farmed fish.

We understand that your travel plans need to be more flexible than ever. We have asked owners to add availability for the rest of this season and for 2021 and if you can't find what you are looking for please speak with a member of the fishing team on our Help Centre.

Tim Greenfield with a fish from Luncarty Monday.

Steve Catto had a fantastic Friday at Newtyle. He had been fishing the beat for the previous two days to no avail. Whilst fly fishing down the Cotter Pool his fly line was ripped out of his hand. After a monumental tussle, Mr Catto landed a cracking twenty three pounder which took a size ten Girnal Shrimp.

At Cargill, there was some good sport to be had with a couple landed on Monday followed by five on Tuesday. Mr Neil French got his rod bent numerous times through the course of the week and landed some nice fish including a cracking sixteen pounder on the fly on Wednesday morning. There were a couple more fish caught from the beat on Thursday. It was a great end to the week at Cargill with six fish landed on Saturday with Mr Gavin Mason and Mr Neil French back amongst the action again. - read more.

There should be some nice fresh fish entering the river in the coming weeks and anglers wishing to fish the Tay have until 15th October before it closes. Edradynate Fishing on the upper Tay report lots of fish running.

River Carron by Tom at FishPal

A view of the River Carron taken by Tom Carter.

It was a joy to be back on the River Carron at Lochcarron and having a cast last week. The trip didn't start as planned as the heavens opened and we endured 36 hours of torrential rain from Saturday eve until Monday morning!

By Tuesday the river was looking great. I bumped into Steve Black, Secretary of Inverness Angling Club, who had also driven down for the day to take advantage of the excellent conditions.
