River Ness News

Scale reading from a salmon caught on Ness Castle on the River Ness.

Earlier this week a scale sample (above) from a 17lb fresh salmon caught and released on the Ness shows that the fish spent two years in freshwater as a juvenile, followed by a further two plus years at sea (total age four plus years). It's egg was laid in winter 2015. It hatched in spring 2016, smolted in spring 2018 and subsequently returned to spawn in 2020. Understanding the age composition of the salmon run is of fundamental importance to the fishery boards, please keep supporting them.

The extra water was the catalyst for catches at Meikleour and Upper Islamouth with twenty two fish and Islamouth finishing on forty-eight fish.
