Fly Tying Competition - Latest News - Angling Community

Newsletter No 13 (April 2020)

Thank you for your understanding and feedback during the last 7 days as we worked through bookings up to the 13th April. I am sure you can appreciate the office is hugely busy right now trying to make sure anglers are rebooked on dates later in the season. If you need help or advice with this and you haven't already been in touch with us, then can I ask you to email [email protected] so we can help answer your questions.

Earlier this week we launched a fly tying competition on Facebook. We would like to thank Loop, Caledonia Fly Company and Fishing TV for the generous prizes. In this weeks newsletter there are details on how you can get involved in the competition.

Whilst the country is in lockdown mode we appreciate the importance of keeping in touch. Every day at 11am on FishPal's Facebook page we are coming to you live with a guest. This week guests include Scott Mackenzie, Ross Macdonald, Gordo and Cheyenne Stronach, Ali & Will Peake and myself. I will be coming to you live today, Thursday 2nd April, at 11am with an update, including a question & answer session. All are available on our facebook page to review.

Whilst we are in lockdown mode, the advice is to stay at home and keep yourself and others safe in doing so, it's not easy I know, as like you I would like nothing better than to be out on the river, but I'm afraid not yet, soon hopefully, but definitely not yet. We all need to comply and do our bit.

Stay safe everyone and thanks.

The river was only fished for two days last week, some beats decided to close from Monday. Water levels were decent and settled and the river was in good condition. Indeed, the Tay was running at its lowest level in recent weeks.

The Meikleour and Upper Islamouth Beat produced a nice springer on Monday. Mr Wood landed the fine fish weighing fourteen pounds from the tail of the March Pool. Further downstream Philip Black tasted success on Islamouth Beat landing a cracking fish. Burnmouth Beat continued its recent success with two beautiful springers, including a magnificent fish weighing seventeen pounds.

Brown Trout Atlantic Salmon

Many fishermen will acknowledge that the brown trout (Salmo trutta) and the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are the world's most intriguing, beautiful and noble fish. Having evolved nearly fifty million years ago in the Eocene epoch, these two species are close genetic cousins and descendants that can be found in oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams across the entire world.

The Brown Trout-Atlantic Salmon Nexus is a complete historical, scientific, artistic, culinary, and practical guide to understanding and appreciating these remarkable fish - read more.

Laxa in Leirarsveit

Laxa in Leirarsveit is one of Iceland's most prolific salmon rivers. It is an excellent river for fly fishing, with an interesting variety of pools. It has a strong and loyal following of both American and British fishers who come back year after year. The average catch per rod makes it one of Iceland's top ten salmon rivers.

The river is 'fisherman friendly' where access to the most of the 45 pools is very easy. Divided into seven beats, each stretch has its own charisma with a mix of slow and fast running water and different landscape. Some of the pools are full of fish throughout the season and are therefore considered by some as Iceland's best fly fishing pools. The average size of salmon is around 6lbs but every year there are some specimens caught weighing around 20lbs and quite a few in the 10-16lbs range. The 5 year average catch is 800 salmon for 90 days of fishing - read more.

The river is located just 30 minutes from Reykjavik and only 7 rods are allowed per day. Jon at FishIceland can arrange for salmon fishing for 2, 4 or 6 days starting on August 1st. This includes transportation to/from Reykjavik, full board accommodation and private guiding (one guide for 2 rods). Contact Jon at FishPal on 01573 470612.

After the surreal feeling of fishing last week the fishing started pretty well on Monday with the Junction having a great day landing eight fish in a day where twenty one fish were reported.

Fishing on Sprouston, Mr Simon Cotton landed two in the Faulds on a Black and Silver and his son Frank landed one in the Mill End. Between them they lost a further three fish, including one right at the net. Speaking to Simon afterwards he said "After such a brilliant day on the river it was heart breaking sitting in our second home in Kelso to hear the PM's announcement but we decided it was morally the correct decision to pack up and head home on Tuesday".

On Upper North Wark the ghillies got a rare chance to have a cast themselves in the afternoon and Mr Richard Farr landed a 9lb long tailed licer from the Snipe on a Maria Devon Minnow while Head Ghillie Martin Ritchie landed a 10lber from the same pool. On South Wark Mr Richard Summers and Mr Steve Jones landed a fish each. Fishing at the Lees Mr Steve Robins has a nice wee springer from the Cauldstream.
