A huge thanks to Robson Green for his support and enthusiasm.

The opening weekend started with a fantastic evening at the River Dee Trust's, Living River, fund raising dinner at Banchory Lodge Hotel. Not only did they raise around 13k for the Trust, guests were also given an impromptu performance of Robson Green singing Proud Mary.

Jim Coates' fish off Invery & Tilquhillie.

The new salmon season kicked off on Saturday and produced a dozen springers. The first fish was landed at five minutes past nine at Woodend by Marcus Braithwaite, fishing a Posh Tosh off an s1/s2 line. Dess was next up with an 8lbr from Jock Rae for owner Jeremy Clayton. Nicol Paton had an 8lbr at Commonty. Jim Coates had the pick of the litter with an 18lbr from Invery & Tilquhillie, while Jamie Hammond had a memorable opening day with a brace at Lower Blackhall and Banchory - read more.

Tiptoe Fishing | 1 Mile Salmon Seatrout | River Till | 2 Rods Per Beat | Orchard Cottage | Accommodation Sleeps 5 | Rod Room | Games Room | Tennis Court | Dog Friendly | Scottish Borders.

Tiptoe fishing on the River Till is approximately two miles upstream from the junction of Tweed at Tillmouth. The beat starts to fish from May onwards with sea trout fishing particularly good from early Summer into early Autumn. There is also a healthy natural stock of brown trout and grayling. The beat fishes best for salmon when the water is above 12″. It is also a beat to consider when the main river is in flood and anglers wish to continue fishing - read more.

Except in high water, wading is necessary if you wish to fish the fly, however only a few parts of the beat are easy to wade, lending itself to the more experienced fly angler. Please note a single 7/8″ or switch rod will cover most eventualities for the beat throughout the year - read more.

Orchard Cottage is uniquely situated only 200 yards walk from the river. It is an enchanting property (designed by Sir Basil Spence) which sits in an exquisite orchard garden, surrounded by apple and damson trees, with spectacular panoramic views of the of the River Till, the Cheviot and Eildon hills – read more.

Herbert Hinterberger with his fish.

The river Tweed season started on Saturday, 1st February, with anglers gathering at Pedwell Landing for the blessing of the river and service of prayers by Reverend Rob Kelsey, Vicar of Norham. Then it was off to the Masons Arms for bacon rolls and hot drinks which was very much appreciated as the day was cold and very windy.

The first fish of the season was caught by Herbert Hinterberger from Sweden. The 12lb springer was caught on Lower Floors and netted by Jonathon Mackereth. Herbert's name will be engraved on to the trophy along with that of the boatman and the beat. Creator of the trophy, artist Jason Sweeney said "We welcome our overseas fishers who have supported the river on the first day for many years. It's now several years since I made the trophy, often referred to as the Kelso Kipper, and it's great to continue the celebration of the opening of Tweed."

Herbert Hinterberger was presented with the trophy by Jason Sweeney in Fin and Game.

The weather and river height on opening day affected fishing below Coldstream, even the new fishing hut on Pedwell beat didn't tempt any anglers on to the river. Closer to Kelso anglers enjoyed some action with kelts and spring fish, including an 11lber caught on Junction by Ian Hayward. Further up river, Bemersyde Fishing held their opening ceremony and Fiona Brown accompanied by a piper blessed the river. She wished all a successful season and thanked the Tweed ghillies, "who keep us all on the right path and tell us where to go". Slàinte mhath!

If like us, you are itching to cast a line on Tweed this year, please call the office on 01573 470612. Alternatively visit FishTweed for the latest availability.
