Yesterday's Catches - Today's River Levels - Tomorrow's Availability

Newsletter No 4 (Jan 2020)

This Saturday marks another milestone in the angling calendar as anglers gather to celebrate the opening of rivers such as the Tweed, Ness, Earn, Tyne, Wear, Brora and Forth.

This week we are featuring the Dee opening, which is always a fantastic affair and hugely well attended.

A special trophy sculpted from old coins from across the globe will be presented at this years Dee opening.

Tom Carter is out on Tweed this Saturday for the opening celebrations at Pedwell Bridge. He will be dropping into various beats to say hello. Currently the river is looking pretty high at the moment - river levels.

The Forth have their opening celebrations in Callander on the banks of the Teith, which is always a well attended affair with pipe bands and free fishing to be had - read more.

Hopefully we will see fresh fish caught and we will of course try and keep everyone up to date with things via our facebook pages where possible. Please do send us your opening day photos so we can share them with the wider angling community.

Mark with Tweed Foundation Director Fay Hieatt.

Mark has been out and about. He presented cheques to the Tweed Foundation and Tweed Forum earlier this week from angler donations when making a booking on the river Tweed. Then it was off to the Tay for two days fishing on Taymount with high hopes, as the beat below caught a 21lber on Monday.

I met up with Richard Fieldhouse to find out more about an exciting new company called Which Salmon Fly. The site can tell you what salmon fly to use by river and its current conditions. Read more about them in this weeks newsletter.

During the coming weeks we are introducing FishPal guides, these are the people who can help you get the best from your fishing trip. We've been working with guides across the UK since 2003 and are regularly asked by customers for recommendations.

We have more availability this week. It's never too early to plan a fishing break and give yourselves something special to look forward to. Give the office a call on 01573 470612 if you would like more information on beats across the FishPal system, along with places to fish for all abilities and budgets.

If you are out and about this week keep sending in your river, fishing hut and fish photographs. We love seeing what you are doing and how much fun you are having out and about on the river.

FishPal gave cheques to the Tweed Foundation and Tweed Forum yesterday.

The Tweed Foundation cheque £585 will be used for Tweedstart. Faye Hieatt, Director of the Tweed Foundation said "We have some new projects starting both with schools and others and so the anglers' support via FishPal for our education programmes under the TweedStart and Go Wild For Fish banners is very helpful. As we noted, the next generation of Tweed anglers is very much required!" - read more.

Upper Blackhall | 1.5 Miles Single Bank | 3 Rods Per Beat | Accommodation Sleeps 12 | River Dee, Scotland | Contact: 01573 470612

Upper Blackhall is a prime salmon fishing beat situated 3 miles west of Banchory on the south bank of the Scottish Dee. It is perhaps the most private beat on the river, within an area of outstanding beauty and abundance of wildlife.

The beat has 15 named pools and fishes well both in high and low water. It is normally restricted to 3 rods, though if conditions are favourable the ghillie may allow 4 to fish.

The top hut overlooks the prestigious Scobboc pool which fishes in all heights of water. The Ferroch pool is opposite Cairnton and, with a large hut overlooking it, is a dream to fish besides being very productive in medium to low water. At the bottom of the beat is the Grey Mare which also fishes in all heights of water and is another substantial holding pool - read more.

He's the actor who's appeared in hit TV dramas and documentary programmes. He's travelled the globe in search of some of the wildest and most elusive fish the seas have to offer with Extreme Fishing. He has also had a string of number one hits, including the best selling single of 1995.

And now, Robson Green has been unveiled as the man who will launch the 2020 fishing season on the River Dee this weekend. He's an angler who loves his fishing and is passionate about salmon conservation.

Opening day on the Dee will continue in the grounds of Banchory Lodge, where the River Dee Trust is holding a small festival from 2pm. The event is one for all the family. It includes a casting competition run by Orvis with a £50 voucher up for grabs. Join them in the marquee at Banchory Lodge to find out how the river is managed and take part in the many activities - read more.

For those of us keen to have a cast, the river is looking good and is a nice height with a water temperature in the region of 3c/38f. Air temperatures will drop below freezing overnight, but daytime temperatures will be up to 9c/48f, which will keep that gap between air and water temperatures about right - read more.

Springer caught on Stobhall Beat Monday.

On some afternoons it felt almost spring-like with temperatures into the low double figures. Water levels gradually dropped through the course of the week and by Wednesday river levels were perfect for many beats on the river with decent water clarity.

Many anglers that did venture out to wet a line enjoyed some rod bending action with a fair number of kelts and older fish being caught up and down the river. It was also good to see a handful of fresh fish landed and well done to all those successful fishers who have already landed their first fish of the decade - read more.

With 63 salmon fisheries on FishTay, there is something for all abilities and budgets. Latest Fishing. Give the office a call on 01573 470612 or email [email protected] if you're looking for guided fishing, recommendations and places to stay.

In a low-flow summer heat-wave, it is appreciated that you may want to be on the water from 5am to fish until breakfast, maybe spend the heat of the day doing something else and then fish the evening until it is too dark to see and the bats are out. Bill knows what he himself expects from a ghillie and this is what he offers his clients.

All ghillie services and instruction are from a qualified teacher. Equipment can be supplied from double handed to switch & trout rods.
