Newsletter May 2018

One of the reasons why May is a wonderful month here at FishPal is because Sand Martins, Swifts and Swallows are starting to arrive and there are two bank holidays, which means there is the chance to go fishing.

So if you are planning a short break for salmon and trout this month do give the office a call. The FishPal site has everything you need to plan the perfect get away including places to fish, where to stay, along with fishing rod hire and guides. Tom Carter and his fishing team are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm with help and advice across the country.

Fish The Dee

FishDee
Mike Forbes with a cracking fresh springer from Dinnet & Deecastle yesterday.

A better week last week, finishing with 85 springers in the book. It's a step in the right direction and I hope we build on it for the rest of the spring. Conditions were good overall, with perhaps a nip in the air at times which didn't help, but all in all no complaints on that score. Looking ahead, a nice wee top up to keep river levels at their optimum, would be nice - read more.

"We are at that time of year when we reach a tactical crossroads. Do we persist with tubes and fishing deep, or start fishing near the surface with small flies? It's time to give the smaller flies - 8s and 10s and small plastic tubes a whirl". says Ross Macdonald, River Dee Reporter.

If you would like to know more about fishing the River Dee please call the office on 01573 470612. Check the latest Dee availability.

Caledonia Fly Company

Caledonia Flies
Springer caught on a Slum Dog Patriot

A fly that is great for peat stained water. With water temperature on the rise now as day temperatures start to head towards the twenties, giving us plenty of snow melt but not too much as the slower the melt the better for the coming months.

Slumdog
The Slum Dog

This is a Caledonia Fly Company variant on the fly created by famous Spey angler Ian Gordon, who designed it many years ago. Find stockists.

Catch And Release

If you are out fishing please remember that any fish caught during Spring will remain in the river for many months before spawning. Please treat them with the utmost care when returning them to continue their journey.

Trout Fishing River Don

FishPal

"I've just spent the last couple of hours enjoying some cracking trout fishing with two fish of 2lb 4oz and 2lbs 8oz within ten minutes of each other. Another two of similar size held on for a moment before slipping the hook and one bending it out altogether when it took off like a train. Cracking day with steady hatch of MB's and Olives looking good for the rest of the week as well." says Jamie Urquhart.

The Kemnay Angling Club beat is located in the middle section of the River Don nestled between the infamous beats of Monymusk and Fetternear Estates. It consists of 1 and a 1/4 miles of South bank fishing and a short section of North bank fishing. The beat runs upstream from the road bridge at Kemnay adjacent to Fetternear Estate as far as the Ton Burn and its march with the Monymusk beat, a few miles from the village of Monymusk - find fishing.

Fish The River Tyne

It seems that fish have begun to ascend the pass in slightly greater numbers this week. The Environment Agency have reported 109 upstream counts up to April 26th. Over half of the fish were recorded last week.

FishPal
Eugene Burzler with a Tyne specimen last month.

After a very quiet period on the river there was a flurry of activity last Wednesday with fish landed just above Riding Mill and another 3 in the Hexham area. The first North Tyne fish of the year was reported on Chesters last Thursday - read more.

We understand that up to date information on the rivers we report for is key to helping you decide which tactics to use along with any last minute fishing trips. Fish The Tay

FishPal
A fresh fish on Catholes.

The week finished with 70 salmon up to 23lbs. The Lower river had another reasonable week with clear water and a maintained height of just above 3 feet due to snow melt. Cargill fared much better with 9 including days of 4 and 3 largely falling to the cast fly. Upper Islamouth and Meikleour continued their successful period with 5.

FishPal
19 lb sea liced fish from Dalmarnock beat.

Murthly and Glendelvine had 11 between them up to 22 pounds. Dalmarnock had a superb 19 pounder from the Glide pool and the Kinnaird beats had 4 fish up to 16 pounds - read more.

The Tay is certainly the place to come to for the chance of a fish of a lifetime. The sheer size of the river produces very powerful large salmon and the possibility of a 40 pounds fish must be on the cards now - find fishing.

Fish The Tweed

The week finished with 60 Salmon up to 20lb. Between Kelso and Coldstream 26 fish were reported with Hendersyde 5 and Sprouston 8 having the best of the fishing. Mr Sandy Wilson landed a 9lber from the Junction and Mr Will Haggas had success fishing Hendersyde.

FishTweed
Nice fish for Mr Tim Briggs this morning on Middle Pavilion Beat.

"With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating or Intermediate lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Aluminium or Copper tubes around 1" should be the order of the day, some anglers may prefer a big dressed fly around a size 6 or 8" says Martin Ritchie, River Tweed Reporter.

Tom Carter is in the office Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and can offer advice on where to go fishing on Tweed. Give him a call on (+44) 01573 470612. Visit Tweed fishing availability.

Sea Trout Night

FishPal
Duke pool at dawn.

Fishpal are organising the annual Seatrout Fishing Night for 2018

After last years success, we had some very valid comments about it being on a Friday Night. So this year we are going to ask for owners and/or managers along with angling clubs to try and offer a Friday Night or a Saturday afternoon/evening and that will hopefully open up the event to even more anglers.

So the dates will be Friday 29 June and or Saturday 30 June. We aim to promote the fisheries, the rods on offer, and booking will be direct with the owner/manager/person in charge. Please do call or mail me with your details and offer for anglers. Email Tom Carter or telephone the office 01573 470612.

Please keep in touch, I will be compiling a list of fisheries on offer for Mid May.
