Nestled in the northwestern countryside of Iceland, the Svartá River is a hidden gem, a tributary of the legendary Blanda River. This exclusive river, limited to four rods, invites anglers to explore its 20km pristine, crystal-clear water. With a remarkable ten-year average of around 300 Atlantic salmon annually—many tipping the scales at 20 pounds or more—the Svartá is a dream destination for those seeking world-class fishing. During the 2024 fishing season, the largest salmon in Iceland was caught on the small Svartá river, a 111cm (43inch) multi sea winter female salmon.
But the allure of the Svartá doesn’t stop with its magnificent salmon. The river also boasts a thriving trout population, making it a perfect spot for anglers wanting to experience both trout and salmon fishing in Iceland. Its fast-flowing currents are tailor-made for floating lines and riffling hitches, while the river’s diverse pools offer endless challenges. One of the most thrilling spots is where the clear waters of the Svartá merge with the turquoise flow of the Blanda, a junction known for its exceptional productivity. For tackle, it is generally fished with a single handed rod #6-8 and a floating line; riffle hitched flies can be particularly effective and exciting.
Your trip to fish the Svarta includes self-catering accommodation in Svarta Lodge. Anglers can unwind in this charming lodge, hidden away in the magical Svartidalur Valley. This fully equipped retreat, complete with a jacuzzi, offers breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding landscape.
Please note that all four rods are sold together and cannot be split, to ensure that you and your guests have the river exclusively. The fishing schedule is: fish the afternoon of arrival day; fish three full days; and then fish the morning of departure, to give 4 days' fishing in total.

The nearest airport to Svarta River is Akureyri which has regular service to Reykjavik. Reykjavik itself is around 180 miles away, around a 3.5 hour drive.
