The Fishery

The Mulvin Fishery is situated in the Townlands of Knockroe and Mulvin and incorporates the largest holding pool on the River Mourne. The Bigh is the largest bend on the River Mourne and offers superb fly fishing on the East Bank of the River Mourne. The large sweeping bend means that the east bank is gravel all the way down which makes for some of the easiest waded fly water on what is one of Europe's finest Rivers. The Mulvin Fishery (Mc Swiggans and Mc Namee's) is located near to Sion Mills, just outside the hamlet of Douglas Bridge in County Tyrone, Ireland. The River Mourne is Ireland's premier fishing river, and offers great opportunities to catch salmon, sea trout, and brown trout. Fishing down the famous Mulvin Bigh pool is not to be missed - it is perfect fly water.

The fishery is divided into two beats, to be fished on a rotation basis by a maximum of four rods in total. Beat 1 'McSwiggans' includes the top of the Bigh, Sally Bush and McSwiggans itself by the hut. Beat 2 'McNamee' offers Knockroe, Mulvin and The Pan.

The fishery is best fished with a ghillie, and offers this service to its guests. This enables the fishery to cater to anglers of all skill levels. The fishery also provides various other services to enhance the angling experience, including accommocation nearby, and fishing equipment in the Guides Choice store in nearby Sion Mills.

The River Mourne is known for its picturesque surroundings and diverse habitats, fed by its tributories the Derg and Strule before joining with the river Finn to form the River Foyle at Strabane on its way to emptying into the sea at Lough Foyle.

Please note that at certain times of the year guests must take a guide.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available at Mulvin, and at certain times of year self catering lodging is included as part of a package that offers fishing and a ghillie. River Mourne Cottage is a recently refurbished  beautiful cottage set in the peaceful  surroundings of the River Mourne. Situated just outside the small village of Douglas Bridge, River Mourne Cottage blends the old with the new: a smart new build set within the surroundings of an old farmhouse holding. The deceptive cottage front opens into a spacious modern stylish country cottage. The cottage is situated down a private lane with a beautiful garden and ample car parking for your stay. A great place to relax and unwind - please see photos for more a view of what the cottage offers. Finn Valley Cottages offers self catering lodgings close to the Mulvin beat, and The Cedar Country Hotel is also nearby. Both can be arranged by prior notice.

¿Por qué necesitas pescar aquí?

The fly fishing season runs from April 1st to October 20th and salmon and trout can be caught across this whole period. Earlier in the season the salmon will be larger MSW fish, fewer in number than the summer but much-prized bars of silver. Numbers of spring fish will build up during April and May before moving through the system to the headwaters further up the river. The grilse run starts at the end of May and continues through the summer months, with notable peaks in late June and mid July into August. Late summer will see the pools full of grilse and also the movement through the beats of MSW fish that have been holding up downriver. September and October can provide excellent sport as fish become more aggressive immediately ahead of the spawning season.
