Moonhaugh Fishings

Moonhaugh Fishings is situated close to the village of Keig (near Alford) on the middle reaches of the river. The fishings extend for approximately 1/2 mile of single left (north bank). There are 6 main holding salmon pools which include the famous Bandley pools along with various other runs and glides more suited for trout fishing. Parking close to the river and a suitable hut are also available to anglers. Both day and weekly permits for salmon and trout are available. Spring salmon can be landed early in the season although mid March through to June offer the best opportunity. Grilse and sea trout appear from June onwards and late evening sport can be worthwhile during the summer months. The beat is well known for holding autumn fish right through till the season closes in October. Brown trout fishing comes into its own early April through into June when the dry fly fishing can be fantastic.  

Please note a vehicle with 4x4 or suitable ground clearance will be required to reach the fishing hut. The owners will not be responsible for vehicles damaged or stranded. 

Only fly fishing is permitted and all anglers must adhere to the Don District Salmon Fishery Board, Conservation Code.

Moonhaugh is a lovely peaceful beat set around farmland, offering affordable fishing for both salmon and trout anglers. The beat has not been let for several years having only been lightly fished by the current owners. The 6 pools all hold a good depth even at summer flows and most can be fished off the bank. However if wading the use of a floatation vest or lifejacket is always advisable.  Catches of salmon and sea trout increased last season and the beat also reported brown trout up to 7lbs. Sea trout can be found in the pools from late May onwards with late evening sport in June worth a try.  

A max of 2 rods per day allows plenty of space for anglers to fish through the pools. On occasion there may be other rods fishing on the opposite bank please use sensible fishing ettiquette.
