Why fish the Dee

Historically, salmon fishing has been renowned in Scotland, but don’t forget we also have wonderful trout fly fishing in rivers, lochs and ponds, along with grayling angling and to a lesser extent but with some great specimens, FishPal also cater for coarse anglers too. Catches, river reports and river levels are also available in the menu as well as tackle advice and fishing regulations.

About the river

' ... it is hard to know what better type of water a keen fly fisherman could ask for.'

John Ashley Cooper

Man wadding in river

The Dee is one of the most attractive rivers in Scotland – in the words of Crawford Little, author of The Great Salmon Beats, it’s 'a scenic treat'.

The river rises in the Cairngorm Mountains and flows east for more than 80 miles through charming rural Aberdeenshire before entering the North Sea at Aberdeen.

It is ideal for fly-fishing. Its fast-flowing, crystal-clear waters are home to a succession of classic salmon pools with narrow necks, fast, broken streams, swift glides and tantalising tails, on the lips of which many running fish are taken. Today, the river welcomes anglers from all over the world, who come in search of that ultimate prize: a fly-caught Dee springer.

Our Angling Heritage

Fishing the Dee also affords anglers an opportunity to be part of a rich angling heritage. The river and its people have helped shape the history of salmon fishing on Deeside and have contributed much to the development of modern angling.

Outstanding salmon flies such as the elegant Blue Charm and the legendary Stoat's Tail are products of Deeside; these patterns are known and loved by anglers everywhere.

In the early 1920’s the forerunner of modern floating line salmon fishing was invented by AHE Wood at Cairnton where his revolutionary greased line technique is one of the great developments in angling.
