The River Ythan has a length of 60 km.
The rives in the North-east of Scotland rising at Wells of Ythan near the village of Ythanwells and flowing south-eastwards through the towns of Fyvie, Methlick and Ellon before flowing into the North Sea near Newburgh, in Formartine.
Although the Ythan is better known for its runs of sea trout, a small run of spring salmon in March leads to grilse runs in July. Summer salmon also enter the river in July and the later months of September and October see larger fish entering the river. In recent years sea trout runs have declined and the annual catch returns are now in the region of 1000. Between 80 and 100 salmon and grilse are caught each season. Season: 11th February to 31st October.
A "wee gem" that runs from source to the mouth of the river at the north east town of Peterhead. A river with a fantastic hatchery programme in place, a fish counter and most importantly unrivalled access for disabled anglers. The river has 6 miles of double bank fishing, but the locals tend to fish off the north bank which contains over three miles of manicured single bank fishing in this north east spate river.
Although the season opens in early February very few migratory enter the river at that time. Sea trout runs begin in late June and continue through the summer months to September - best months July and August. Summer salmon and grilse normally enter the river in July with runs continuing into October - best months August and September. Between 75 and 100 salmon and grilse with an average weight of 8lb are caught annually. In recent years sea trout runs have declined and between 200 and 300 are caught each season. Season: 16th February to 31st October.
The river has a length of 60 miles (97 km), and has a reputation for its salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing. In its upper reaches peaty water flows over a bottom of shingle and rock and is fast flowing.

The estuary beat known as the Newburgh Fishings has 5 beats with 17 named pools. Our entire rod fishery is entirely open and unrestricted in terms of rod numbers. Anglers can fish wherever they choose on the Newburgh beat. Although fish can be taken at low tide the beats are best fished on a falling tide. There are three angling associations on the river - Fyvie, Newburgh and Aberdeen and all have provision for visitors at reasonable cost's. A number of estates have parts of their fishing available to visitors - among them are Esslemont Estate, Ellon Castle, Haddo House, Shiva's Estate and Udny Estate.
