The Tillmouth fishings extend for 4.14 miles of single, English bank, downstream from Coldstream Bridge and has 22 named pools which hold fish from Spring, Summer and Autumn seasons. The Beat extends through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is sheltered by a series of spectacular river cliffs and wooded banks which provide a haven for wildlife. Otters, kingfishers and peregrines are a common sight by visiting anglers.

For the fisherman the beat offers privacy and seclusion.

Tillmouth enjoys prolific runs of hard fighting fresh salmon throughout the Tweed's ten-month season and its 22 main holding pools offer both good high and low water fishing. Depending upon river levels, most of the pools offer easy wading from accessible banks. For boat fishing Tillmouth has 12 boats spread between all its main pools.

Visiting anglers with their own vehicles will find access to the pools straightfoward. Large parties of people would be advised to have at least one 4x4.

Tillmouth is a 6 rod rotating beat throughout the year. From the end of August to end of October the beat will be fished by the owners. Very occassionally some rods may become available during this period.

During the season, if the 6th rod is not paid for by midday the previous day a boatman for this 6th rod is not guaranteed (however all reasonable endeavours to provide a boatman will be made).

A fishing hut has been constructed at the the Long Stream, just below Coldstream Bridge, giving easy vehicle access off the A697.

The new hut now forms the focal point for the beat and is the meeting point for fishing parties and boatmen. The hut has all facilities and will cater for large parties.

The owners of Tillmouth are supporters of the Tweed Angling Code and its conservation measures and tenants will be encouraged to follow these guidelines.

Tillmouth conditions

1. The season is from 1st February to 30th November and there is no fishing on Sundays.
2. During the normal letting season from the opening to close of season the Tillmouth beat is fished as six one rod beats. Rods rotate one beat each day so that someone fishing the whole week will fish every beat.
3. From the last full week of August to the end of October, Tillmouth is fished by the owners using a different rotation system. Very occasionally some rods may become available during this period.
4. A boatman is provided for each beat. However, if the 6th rod is not paid for by midday the previous day a boatman for this 6th rod is not guaranteed (however all reasonable endeavours to provide a boatman will be made).
5. A draw for the beats will take place at the Bridge Hut immediately below the Coldstream Bridge, on the A697 on the South Bank, at 09.00am on Monday mornings. The draw is final and rods not present will be drawn by Head Boatman Willy Elliot. It is the responsibility of the rods to be present for the draw. In the event of absence there will not be a second draw. Any rods not fishing a full week will fit in with the drawn position of the rod they replace. Fishing will commence after the draw unless otherwise agreed. It is recognised that during summer months the best chance of catching a salmon may be in the early and late hours of light. Discretion on the starting and finishing time may be given by the boatmen. A rod is not permitted to fish early or late without first obtaining permission.
6. Each rod will finish on the pool allotted in the pm period. It is not permissible to change pools after 5pm.
7. It is not permissible to transfer a rod to any third party once the paying rod has stopped fishing OTHER than to the boatman accompanying the rod or an owner if available.
8. In accordance with normal Tweed Rules, Tillmouth is fly only 1 February-15 February and from 14 September-30 November. The pools Long Stream and Border Maid are fly only in the mornings throughout the season. No prawns, worms, shrimps or gaffs can be used at any time.
9. During the periods when spinning is permitted fishing should be by fly initially if conditions are appropriate. The use of the spinner will be supervised by the attending boatman and its use will be at his discretion and dependent upon conditions. Rods should only use "flying condoms" if fitted with a single hook. Single hook "flying condoms" can be obtained from the boatmen or from various online retailers. Spinning will only be allowed for 1 hour per day.
10. Tillmouth observes various rota arrangements with its neighbours. The boatmen will guide the rods on the observation and compliance with these rotas.
11. The boats are to be used by the boatmen only and not by rods after 5pm.
12. Rods must obey the law in relation to catch and release of all salmon and sea trout before the end of March, and Tweed Rules and Codes relating to the catch and release of all salmon between the beginning of April and the end of June. See: Tweed Conditions
13. Tillmouth also encourages catch and release throughout the season. Rods should familiarise themselves with the guidance "Catch and Release for Salmon an Anglers Guide" Rods will be encouraged to return all hens. To assist successful catch and release treble hooks are discouraged.
14. For the avoidance of doubt the Tweed best practice guidance that no salmon may be killed between 1st April and the end of June will be applied as a rule. Every effort must be made in accordance with the code to resuscitate a fish, but even if despite those efforts it seems likely that the fish will not survive it should be returned to the water unless it is dead. Fish may not be killed e.g. by being hit on the head.
15. If a fish is deep hooked then consideration must be given to cutting the line and leaving the hook or fly in the fish. Fishermen should accept their boatman’s advice on this.
16. If a dead fish is taken from the river it can in no circumstances be retained by the fisherman. The fish will become the property of the owners and will be offered to the Tweed Biologist for scientific analysis.
17. Anglers who comply with the Tweed Codes may order a Tweed shirt from The Tweed Foundation. Forms are in the main Hut.
18. To help prevent an outbreak of Gyrodactylus Salaris which has had catastrophic effects on some foreign rivers, all rods fishing must complete a Gyrodactylus declaration on arrival at the fishery. This states that either you have not used your fishing tackle abroad in the last three months, or you have done so and had it properly sterilised, or you have done so and NOT had it sterilised. In the latter case, you must agree to sterilisation taking place before you start fishing, and accept that there may be some delay in getting this organised. 19. All rods MUST return a signed declaration against Gyrodactylus Salaris and give it to the attending boatman before fishing, without which they will not be allowed to commence fishing. Any rods from abroad should arrive early to allow for their equipment to be fully disinfected or the attending boatman will supervise use of the Estate's equipment.
20. When fishing life jackets should be worn and are available on request without charge. Prior to fishing ALL anglers MUST sign the disclaimer provided in relation to the wearing of live jackets, without which they will not be allowed to commence fishing.
