Over 100,000 rod/days to choose from!
Horncliffe's fishing consists of two miles of single bank fishing on the right (south) bank of the Tweed which is divided into three beats. The upper limit of the fishing is at Norham Castle and the lower limit is the top of St Thomas Island approximately six miles inland from Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Horncliffe, like the adjoining Ladykirk and Tweedhill fishings, is essentially a low water beat.
Tenants are usually allowed to fish outside normal hours (9.15 am to 5 pm) unless there are very large numbers of fish in the beat in prolonged low water conditions.
River conditions and the correct equipment to bring. Tenants are reminded that chest waders are essential and that the paths to the river can be very slippery in wet weather.
Subletting is not permitted and that rod sharing is at the discretion of the ghillie. Please call FishTweed or the ghillie prior to booking if you wish to rod share.
Each of the three beats is fished by two rods.
A rota system operates with rods moving down a beat at lunchtime.
The riverside track provides access to beats 2 and 3. Beat 1 is best approached by car (parking at Norham Castle) or alternatively it can be reached on foot by the Norham wood path.
A boat is provided although almost all the fish are caught from the bank. Long stretches of water offer easily wadeable fishing over smooth gravel. Other stretches with rocky shelves are more difficult to wade but here the fish lie quite close into the rock shelf.
A fishing hut (formerly the netting shiel) situated at the bottom of beat 2 is equipped with wood & gas fires, a small refrigerator and gas cooking ring, together with barbecue facilities and adequate parking spaces.
With sufficient notice an additional boatman can be arranged at a cost per day (payable directly).
Tony Averill is the full time boatman and heads the fishing. Rods 14-15ft 10-11 weight, 0r 11-13ft 8-10 weight rods in summer and very low water conditions.
