Overview

Stenton Beat is one of the most picturesque salmon beats on the River Tay with eight superb pools offering the fly fisherman sport the whole length of the beat.

The middle Tay beats fish well throughout the season. Many spring salmon make their first stop at Murthly and Stenton so a fresh springer can be expected. During the summer months the grilse and summer salmon fishing can be first rate. Given a lift in the water levels, good catches of fish can then be made in the autumn.

The beat extends to half a mile of single (left) bank fishings and is fished by wading and from the boat. An arrangement exists with the proprietors of the opposite bank whereby anglers fish double bank on alternate days. There is one ghillie on the beat and one boat but much of the river can easily and safely be fished by wading, especially in lower water.

Stenton fishes well in all heights of water, throughout spring and summer into autumn. The 5 year beat average is 62 salmon / grilse per annum for 2 rods. It is possible to fish a third rod at the discretion of the ghillie. Named pools are: Hilda’s Hole, The Meetings, Willie’s Hole, Stenton Pool, Steps, Rock Pool, Fir Tree and Neck of Willie’s.

The beat is located two miles from Dunkeld and marches with the Glendelvine water where Miss Ballantine caught the British record salmon.

Stenton House stands in a magnificent position over looking Stenton Beat and is the perfect venue for fishing parties, shooting parties or for a special family gathering. This elegant Victorian house offers extremely comfortable accommodation for up to 14 guests. The house is surrounded by private gardens and grounds which have been carefully designed and meticulously maintained to create the perfect environment and enhance the superb backdrop of the River Tay and rolling countryside beyond.
