Overview

The renowned Lower Kinnaird beat is arguably the most prolific fly fishing beat on the entire middle Tay. The beat is part of the stunning Kinnaird Estate which also offers some of the very finest riverside accommodation in Perthshire.

The beat was adored by the late John Ashley-Cooper, the famous fishing author and exceptional angler. Many other famous salmon fishers have also enjoyed fishing Kinnaird over the years.

Lower Kinnaird commences at the River Tummel road bridge (A827) incorporating the last three salmon pools of the River Tummel and down into the renowned Junction Pool where the Tummel greets the Tay. The beat extends a further 2 miles downstream and incorporates some of the best 'holding' fly water on the Tay including famous pools such as Ferry Stream, Plantation, Swimming Pool, Island Stream, Green Bank, Ash Trees, New Pool, Fir Trees, Kindallachan & the Guay Pool.

Fresh run fish are present in the Kinnaird beat from January onwards due to the early run of Loch Tay salmon and the early arriving River Tummel salmon which 'back up' in this throughout the Spring months. The fishing increases in potency from March onwards with more and more salmon seeking refuge in the unique pool formations Kinnaird is fortunate to benefit from.

Predominantly Kinnaird is a fly fishing beat however other fishing methods are permitted at the discretion of the head ghillie. Martin Edgar has worked on the Kinnaird water for 10 years and has recently taken over the role as head ghillie. His understanding of the beat is second to none which compliments his enthusiasm and drive in delivering the perfect 'client experience'.

A boat & ghillie service is available for harling (or fishing from) at the cost of £150 per day in addition to the daily permit costs (maximum 2 fishers per boat). This additional service must be booked in advance through the estate office (subject to availability). The boat operating hours are from 10am to 1pm & 2.30pm to 5pm daily.

The fishing hut on Lower Kinnaird has been upgraded to a very high standard and is one of the best on the Tay system. It has full cooking facilities, hot and cold water, WC, fridge and freezer. Kinnaird can supply guests with lunch in the hut if they wish. The beat also holds a good stock of high quality fishing equipment should a client wish to hire fishing tackle.
