Why fish Lochaber

For fishing as wild as the dramatic surrounding landscape, Lochaber, the area around Fort William in the stunning Scottish Highlands, is the perfect choice.

Historically, salmon fishing has been renowned in Scotland, but don’t forget we also have wonderful trout fishing in rivers, lochs and ponds, along with grayling angling and to a lesser extent but with some great specimens, FishPal cater for coarse anglers too.  Take a look at the Fisheries list in the menu to see the fisheries and beats which show their rivers off with any availability shown, or do a search for Salmon, Sea trout, brown trout or grayling. Catches, river reports and river levels are also available in the menu as well as tackle advice and fishing regulations.

Here you can fish the 'Queen of Scottish salmon rivers' in the shadow of Britain's highest mountain or tempt wild trout from the icy waters of the country's deepest loch.

For salmon fishing, the River Lochy is unrivalled on the West Coast of Scotland. Excellent runs of grilse and spring fish that regularly top 20lbs draw anglers from around the world. Anglers on more modest budgets can enjoy outstanding salmon and sea trout fishing on the rivers Aline, Inverie, Nevis and Strontian when conditions are right. The immense scale of Lochs Arkaig and Morar is matched only by the ferocity of their ferox and beauty of their brownies.

About Lochaber

The west coast of Scotland has some of the most varied and spectacular scenery to be found anywhere in Scotland. These rivers vary from being truly wild, unspoilt spate rivers that fish best on falling water following a rise in levels, to rivers such as the Lochy which will fish well at a variety of water heights.

What to bring

Despite salmon being present, during low conditions they are often difficult to tempt.

Experienced anglers visiting these waters should not only take a double-handed salmon rod (13-15') but also go equipped with a trout rod to take advantage of the good wild brown trout fishing to be had on the local lochs and sea trout in some of the sea lochs. River boundaries and fishing rights extend up to 1 mile from the river mouth so please avoid this area unless you have permission.

Sustainable fisheries

Lochaber Fisheries Trust is a charity working towards the protection of all wild fish and their habitats across Lochaber. We liaise with river owners, managers, anglers, government agencies and others to ensure that the region's fresh waters are protected and managed sustainably.

Our work with river owners and managers to review fish populations and river habitats allows us to protect and preserve this wonderful and precious natural resource.

Many of the fisheries operate full or partial catch and release policies to try to maintain our natural populations of wild fish. When you come fishing in Lochaber, you know you are fishing in well-managed rivers with owners who care about sustainable fishing and wish to ensure that our fish populations persist for many thousands of years to come.
