By road

Galloway is easily accessed from the A75 Euroroute which runs between Carlisle and Stranraer and links directly with the M74. On the A75, it only takes around 1 hour from Carlisle to reach the River Urr whilst a further 50 mins drive will take you over the other Galloway rivers to the furthest west of the rivers, the River Luce.

By air and rail

If travelling by air, the nearest airports are Prestwick, Glasgow and Edinburgh. All are between 1.5 to 2.5 hours drive from Galloway or from Prestwick there is a rail service to Stranraer which will put you in the west of the Galloway region.

The West Coast main line passes through Dumfries to the east of Galloway whilst there is also a rail service from Ayr to Stranraer on the west of the Galloway region.

Bus services run between Stranraer and Dumfries - further details are available from However, for easy access to some parts of the river you may be better with a car.

The HSS Ferry

By sea

If travelling from Ireland, the best thing to do is to head for Larne or Belfast to take the ferry to either Stranraer or Cairnryan and you'll step or drive ashore in Dumfries & Galloway. Stena Line operates between Belfast and Stranraer. P&O Irish Sea Ferries run between Larne and Cairnryan. In all, there are twenty crossings from Northern Ireland to Dumfries & Galloway every day.
